SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- The No. 6-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team claimed five matches, splitting the dual evenly, but was doomed by bonus points in a 22-17 defeat at No. 15 South Dakota State on Thursday night (Jan. 4) at the Sanford Pentagon. The loss was Michigan's first in dual action this season.
The Wolverines (2-1), who were missing a handful of regular starters due to illness and injury, defeated ranked opponents in all five of their wins, including a pair from true freshmen and a top-five showdown at 174 pounds.
Graduate student Shane Griffith, ranked fifth at 174 pounds, used an overtime takedown to edge fourth-ranked Cade DeVos 4-1 and pick up his first ranked win of the season. After the wrestlers traded little more than escapes, Griffith fought off a deep SDSU single-leg attack over the final 30 seconds of the third period then converted on one of his own to end the bout just 31 seconds into the extra frame.
Freshmen Sergio Lemley and Beau Mantanona earned decision wins at 165 and 141 pounds, respectively. Lemley, ranked 30th by InterMat, rallied to defeat 14th-ranked Clay Carlson 6-4 and stay unbeaten in dual competition. Down by two points after a second-period SDSU takedown, Lemley drew a stall point and finished on a single leg in the final 30 seconds of the third, riding out the bout to ice the win.
Mantanona defeated 30th-ranked Tanner Cook 4-2 in his collegiate dual debut at 165 pounds. He won a wild scramble for the winning takedown in the first period and came close in a couple later scrambles. It was Mantanona's third straight win over a ranked opponent following his third-place finish at the Midlands Championships. He is 15-4 in his redshirt season.
Michigan also earned a win from graduate student Austin Gomez in his Maize and Blue debut, scoring three takedowns and accumulating 1:19 in riding time to beat 18th-ranked Alek Martin 10-4 at 149 pounds. Gomez, ranked ninth since officially joining the Wolverine roster in December, finished on two single-leg attacks in the first period and added another off a gator roll in the second.
Graduate student Lucas Davison, ranked fourth at heavyweight, closed out the dual with a dominant 20-4 technical fall over 33rd-ranked Luke Rasmussen in the final bout. Davison scored on five takedowns -- two apiece in the second and third periods -- and added a four-point leg turk late in the former frame. He improved to 7-1 on the season with six bonus wins.
The Davison tech fall was the Wolverines' lone bonus win of the dual, while SDSU (4-2) earned bonus in four, including a third-period pin at 133 pounds. Junior/sophomore Christian Tanefeu put up a strong fight while stepping in at 125 pounds, falling to 18th-ranked Tanner Jordan 5-3 after leading for much of the bout on a first-period takedown.
The Wolverines will kick off their Big Ten Conference slate with two duals next weekend. Michigan will travel to College Park to face Maryland at 7:30 p.m. on Friday (Jan. 12) before kicking off its home slate against in-state rival Michigan State at 1 p.m. on Sunday (Jan. 14) at Crisler Center. Both duals will be streamed live on B1G+, and tickets are still available for the MSU dual.
