EVANSTON, Ill. -- The No. 18-ranked University of Michigan men's soccer team fell to Northwestern 1-0 on Friday (Oct. 18) at Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium.
Northwestern out-shot Michigan 7-4, with the Wolverines managing two attempts in each half. Isaiah Goldson tallied two saves to keep Michigan (6-3-4, 1-3-3 Big Ten) in the match.
Defense dominated the first half, with the two sides combining for just six shot attempts and Northwestern holding a 4-2 advantage. The Wildcats struck first in the 23rd minute as Tyler Glassberg received a cross from Bryant Mayer to put Northwestern up 1-0. After being held without a shot for over 38 minutes, Oliver Martin and Murphy Parker each attempted one to give Michigan some momentum heading into halftime trailing 1-0.
Northwestern (8-5-0, 2-4-0 Big Ten) looked poised to double its lead in the first minute of the second half as Glassberg had an open look in the middle of the penalty box. Goldson was equal to the challenge as he dove to his left and parried the shot wide. Neither team managed to generate many chances for the remainder of the half. Michigan applied consistent pressure in the final 10 minutes, including a few set pieces, but could not find the breakthrough as Northwestern secured the win.
Up next, Michigan will travel to East Lansing, Mich., to take on rival Michigan State on Tuesday (Oct. 22) at 7 p.m. on Big Ten Network.
