
U-M Wins Nine Events, Takes First-Day Lead over Wisconsin

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 16-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team won nine events and took a commanding 152-51 lead over No. 23-ranked Wisconsin on Friday (Oct. 18) inside Canham Natatorium.
The team of Jaeddan Gamilla, Gal Groumi, Bence Szabados and Jack Wilkening took first in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:11.65.
Freshman Jon Jøntvedt made a strong first impression in Canham with a win in the 1,000-yard freestyle, registering a time of 9:06.46. Eduardo Moraes and Joshua Brown finished second and third with marks of 9:08.69 and 9:15.19, respectively, to cap off a dominant display in the distance event.
Michigan's success continued in the 200-yard backstroke as Eitan Ben-Shitrit grabbed the top spot with a mark of 1:45.95 while Wilkening finished just behind at 1:47.17.
Szabados shined in the 50 free with a winning time of 19.73 seconds. Tyler Ray followed closely and secured second with a strong mark of 20.09.
After an intermission, U-M got right back to notching first-place finishes, starting with Colin Geer, who triumphed in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:00.01.
Ray outraced the field in the 100-yard butterfly, beating out Groumi and touching the wall with 46.88 seconds on the timer. Moraes continued his strong performance with a victory in the 200 free, clocking a 1:37.04.
Closing out the individual events, Lorne Wigginton made his home debut in style by taking the top spot in the 400-yard IM with a time of 3:49.59. Ryan Healy and William Savarese completed the sweep of the event with times of 3:54.62 and 3:57.64, respectively.
Cameron Gammage took control in the dive well, sweeping both the one-meter and three-meter dives. He posted a score of 334.45 on the one-meter board and a total of 354.10 on the three-meter board to get his senior season off to a winning start.
Michigan will wrap up its dual with Wisconsin on Saturday (Oct. 19) at 10 a.m. inside Canham Natatorium.
