Vaulet’s Big Night Propels U-M to Victory Over Washington

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Valentina Vaulet led the University of Michigan volleyball team to a three-set win over Washington, 27-25, 25-23, 25-20, on Friday night at Crisler Center.
Michigan (15-3, 5-2 Big Ten) was led by Vaulet, who tallied a double-double with 15 kills, 14 digs, and six aces—all team highs—while hitting .414. Allison Jacobs and Jacque Boney also recorded double-digit kills, with Jacobs adding 14 and Boney tallying 10. Morgan Burke ran the U-M offense with 41 assists, leading Michigan to a .307 match hitting percentage. Jenna Hanes had five kills on 10 swings in her first full game.
Washington (13-4, 3-4 Big Ten) opened the match with a kill, but the teams battled hard in the first set, which saw 15 ties. After splitting the first eight points, Michigan took a 6-4 lead with a Huskies error and a kill from Hanes. The Wolverines continued to lead with short runs, including an ace from Vaulet to put U-M up 11-7. Washington tied the match at 13, prompting a Michigan timeout. Both teams exchanged two-point leads, with Michigan leading 16-14 and Washington at 19-17, but the match was tied at 20 after a kill from Demetrician. Mira Chopra tallied an ace to give Michigan set point, but the Huskies stopped it with a kill. Vaulet gave U-M another chance, and Boney finished off the set with a kill for a 27-25 first-set win.
Hanes opened the second set with a kill before the teams split the next nine points for an early tie at 5-5. The Huskies then went on a run to take a 12-6 lead, forcing a Michigan timeout. U-M responded with a 7-3 run led by two points from Burke and two kills from Vaulet, prompting a Washington timeout with Michigan trailing 15-13. The Huskies reached 23 points in the set, but a kill from Vaulet brought her to the line, and her serving run opened with an ace. After a kill from Demetrician put U-M within one, Washington called a timeout, but Jacobs tied the match with a kill after the break. A Huskies attack error put U-M at set point, and Jacobs finished off the second set with a kill, completing a 6-0 run to win the set 25-23.
Michigan had 19 kills and no errors for a .500 hitting percentage en route to a 25-20 third-set win. The Huskies opened the set on a 2-0 run, but the Wolverines tied it at 3 after kills from Demetrician and Vaulet and an ace from Vaulet. The Huskies retook the lead and kept it until three consecutive kills from Jacobs put Michigan up 14-13. The Wolverines stayed in front for the rest of the set, with Demetrician tallying an ace at 15-13, forcing a media timeout. The Huskies pulled within one at 16-15, but Boney tallied a kill out of a timeout after a Michigan challenge. Michigan reached 20 points after a kill from Jacobs, and the Wolverines took five of the final eight points of the set, as Jacobs secured the match-winning kill.
The Wolverines will return to Crisler Center on Sunday, Oct. 20, to face No. 9 Wisconsin at 7:30 p.m., with the match airing live on Big Ten Network.
