ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan hockey team (0-0-0) opens the 2024-25 season hosting Minnesota State (0-0-0) at Yost Ice Arena this weekend. The teams will face off on Friday (Oct. 4) at 7 p.m. and Saturday (Oct. 5) at 6 p.m., and both games will be streamed live on B1G+.
Notes
• The Wolverines are coming off of their third straight Frozen Four appearance, posting a 23-15-3 overall record before falling to then No. 1-ranked Boston College in the national semifinals.
• There are 15 returners from last year's squad. The coaching staff brings in 12 newcomers, consisting of five transfers and seven freshmen.
• Captain Jacob Truscott returns to guide the squad for the second straight season. He is just the ninth player in program history to captain the team in multiple years and the first since Luke Glendening in 2010-11 and 2011-12. T.J. Hughes and Ethan Edwards will serve as alternate captains.
• The offense will need to replace 56 percent of its scoring from last season after five of the top six scorers signed NHL contracts over the summer. Hughes is the top returning scorer with 48 points (19 goals, 29 assists) in 40 games. Sophomores Garrett Schifsky and Nick Moldenhauer follow with 34 and 21 points, respectively.
• The Wolverines also will have a new netminder. Freshman Cameron Korpi and grad transfer Logan Stein will battle for the starting spot. Graduate student Andrew Albano will also push for playing time.
• Michigan sported the nation's best power-play unit last season, converting on 33.6 percent of its opportunities. Only Truscott returns from that first unit as the special teams rebuild.
• Freshman and Montreal Canadiens draft selection Michael Hage was named to the College Hockey News All-Rookie Team. Michigan has produced the CHN Rookie of the Year three of the last four years.
• U-M was selected to finish third in the Big Ten preseason poll, as voted on by the head coaches of all seven teams. Truscott and Hughes were named preseason second-team selections.
• Michigan has faced Minnesota State just one time, on Oct. 16, 2021, at the Ice Breaker in Duluth, Minn. The Wolverines won the Ice Breaker with their seven first-round draft picks after defeating the home team, Minnesota Duluth, 5-1, and then a 3-2 victory over the Mavericks. The teams faced off again, but only across the hall way from each other as opposing teams in the semifinals at the 2022 Frozen Four.
