
Michigan Holds on to Defeat Toledo in Charity Exhibition Contest

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In its second charity exhibition game this week, the University of Michigan men's basketball team defeated Toledo 96-92 on Friday night (Oct. 25) at Crisler Center.
Leaders and Best
Roddy Gayle Jr. and L.J. Cason each scored 20 points for the Wolverines. Gayle shot 5-for-10 from the field and went 9-for-10 from the free-throw line. Cason went 6-for-7 and shot a perfect 4-for-4 from three-point range. Vladislav Goldin scored 13 points and pulled in six rebounds. Will Tschetter dropped 12 and Sam Walters chipped in 11 points to help U-M.
Second Half
Michigan built on its 50-38 halftime lead in the first five minutes of the second half. A layup from Tschetter put U-M up 16, 58-42, its largest lead of the game. A 10-0 Toledo run cut into the Michigan lead; the Rockets made five straight field goals, but U-M still led 58-52 with 14 minutes remaining.
After making eight straight field goals, Toledo missed its first shot since the 17:30 mark. With 10 minutes to go, the Wolverines held a 69-59 lead but a 6-0 Rockets run brought them within four points of U-M, 78-74, with 5:18 left in regulation. Michigan responded with two free throws, but missed six straight field goals that allowed Toledo to go on a 6-0 run. Michigan held on to an 83-80 lead with 3:28 to play.
Toledo pulled within one point, 83-82, with 3:13 left, but Michigan pulled away, making four of its last five field goals of the game.
First Half
Michigan opened the contest with a two-minute scoring drought and missed six straight field goals until a deep three from Nimari Burnett pulled U-M within 6-5 four minutes into the contest.
The Wolverines picked up the scoring and captured the lead, 10-8, with 14 minutes to go. Beginning at the 13:41 mark, Cason made four straight shots, including two three-pointers, to put U-M up 22-20 with 9:55 to play in the opening half. Continuing its shooting success, U-M went on a 6-0 run making six straight field goals. Michigan took advantage of Toledo's cold streak to go up 31-22 with 7:52 to go.
Cason made his third three of the half to end a Toledo 6-0 run and a two-minute scoring drought for U-M. Michigan rebuilt its lead to six (36-30) with 4:45 left. Michigan finished the first 20 minutes making six of its last seven field-goal attempts, including the Cason's fourth three of the half, and lead 50-38 at the half.
What's Next
Michigan will begin its regular season with a matchup against Cleveland State on Monday, Nov. 4 at Crisler Center. Tipoff is slated for 8 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
