ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team posted advantages in both shots and penalty corners but struggled to sustain offensive momentum in a 2-1 loss to Indiana in its home finale on Sunday (Oct. 27) at Phyllis Ocker Field.
Michigan evened the score just 18 seconds into the second half on a tip goal from graduate student Kate McLaughlin. Senior Alana Richardson received the ball in the circle from sophomore Abby Burnett and hammered it toward the right post, where McLaughlin redirected it in for her 11th marker this season.
But Indiana answered late in the third quarter, at 41:36, when Ines Garcia Prado carried the ball right to left along the arc and fired a reverse chip low into the Wolverine cage. The Hoosiers' first goal of the game came at the 21:01 mark in the second quarter on another unassisted effort from Yip van Wonderen, going cross cage to the left corner of the cage.
Michigan out-shot the Hoosiers, 10-4, and out-cornered them, 4-2. Sophomore/freshman goalkeeper Hala Silverstein faced just the two shots on goal, while Indiana's Sadie Canelli stopped three of four U-M shots on goal.
Michigan (11-4, 4-3 Big Ten) will wrap up the regular season at Iowa next Friday (Nov. 1) in Iowa City. The game is slated for a 5 p.m. CT start at Grant Field and will be streamed live on B1G+.
