ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season at the hands of No. 4-ranked Ohio State by a score of 6-3 on Friday (oct. 4) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
Three different players accounted for the Wolverines' tallies. Oliver Martin scored his second goal in as many matches while Beto Soto and Jason Bucknor each found the back of the net. Dylan Davis registered his first career point on an assist on Martin's tally. Joao Paulo Ramos lent the crucial pass on Soto's marker, and Murphy Parker notched his first career assist as Bucknor scored in the waning moments of the match.
Ohio State (8-0-2, 3-0-1 Big Ten) took control early as Marko Barkovic slid the ball past a diving Isaiah Goldson to open the scoring and take a 1-0 lead. It marked the first time the Wolverines have conceded first in 2024. The Buckeyes doubled their advantage in the 15th minute on a score by David Wrona. OSU clamped down defensively and maintained its two-goal advantage heading into halftime.
Michigan (5-1-4, 1-1-3 Big Ten) found the breakthrough in the 60th minute. Davis intercepted a pass and briskly dribbled into the penalty box before feeding Martin for his third goal of the season. Ohio State grabbed the momentum right back in the 70th minute as Michael Andedokun scored to put the Buckeyes back up, 3-1. Andedokun's marker kicked off a run of four straight goals for the visitors that ballooned their lead to 6-1 with just over 10 minutes remaining. Soto and Bucknor scored to draw the Maize and Blue closer, but OSU's lead proved to be too great as the Buckeyes handed U-M its first defeat of 2024.
Up next, Michigan will travel to South Bend, Ind., to take on Notre Dame on Tuesday (Nov. 8) at 7 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.
