SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- After suffering its first loss of 2024, the University of Michigan men's soccer team responded with a 1-0 win over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Tuesday, Oct. 8, at Alumni Stadium.
Bryce Blevins provided the decisive score, his fourth goal of the season and first since Sept. 21. Beto Soto assisted on Blevins' tally, marking the 10th consecutive match the graduate student has scored or logged an assist. Senior Hayden Evans got the start in goal and posted eight saves to preserve the shutout and the first road win of 2024. Tuesday's victory is the first over Notre Dame since 2019.
The first half was a defensive battle with neither team able to create a quality scoring chance. Evans tallied three saves in the first half alone, including a stop at the near post in the 13th minute. On offense, Soto accounted for all of the shot attempts for the Maize and Blue, but none found the target as the half ended scoreless.
Michigan (6-1-4, 1-1-3 Big Ten) found the breakthrough early in the second half as Soto pushed the ball forward down the left sideline into the path of Blevins. Blevins took a shot that deflected off an Irish defender and into the back of the net to put U-M on top at the 48th minute of play.
Notre Dame (5-3-3, 2-2-0 ACC) then took control of possession and fired each of the next seven shots. Evans was equal to the task, stopping four of those shot attempts. As the match entered the final 10 minutes, Notre Dame generated multiple corner chances, but Michigan kept the Fighting Irish at bay. The Wolverines kept the ball in the attacking half for the final three minutes to seal the victory.
Up next, Michigan will return to U-M Soccer Stadium to take on Indiana on Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. on Big Ten Network.
