ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's basketball team rode four double-digit scorers and a strong second-half performance to defeat TCU 76-64 on Friday night (Nov. 15) in the opener of a three-game homestand at Crisler Center.
Leaders and Best
Nimari Burnett was the leading scorer for the Wolverines with 16 points and six rebounds. Danny Wolf added 14 points and 14 rebounds for his second double-double of the season and Tre Donaldson had 14 points, while Sam Walters chipped in 10 points.
First Half
After starting off strong shooting 3-for-3 from the field, Michigan (2-1) turned the ball over six times in quick succession, giving TCU (3-1) eight points off of turnovers. A defensive back-and-forth battle ensued, with a made layup by Roddy Gayle Jr. giving the Wolverines an 11-10 lead at 13:36.
Following a two-minute stretch during which TCU went 1-for-8 from the field, U-M led 21-15 at the 7:56 mark. The teams traded points until a 7-0 Michigan run brought its lead to eight, 32-23 with 3:41 left in the half.
Michigan's offense failed to convert over the last three minutes, and TCU went on a 6-0 run to cut the lead to three at halftime, 34-31.
Eleven U-M players saw time in the first half, with seven scoring. Burnett led the way for the Wolverines with 10 points on 4-for-4 shooting, the only Michigan player to reach double-digits in the first 20 minutes. Wolf added eight rebounds and five points. U-M had 16 turnovers in the first half, compared to TCU's eight.
Second Half
As both teams traded baskets early, U-M held an eight-point lead, 46-38 through the first five minutes. Following a 4-for-5 shooting stretch, Michigan extended its lead to 51-40 at the 13:57 mark.
The Wolverines entered the bonus before the 10-minute mark of the second half, but TCU's 5-0 run helped cut the U-M lead to 54-50 at 10:34. Another three-basket spurt by the Horned Frogs shrunk U-M's lead to two, with just under seven minutes remaining, TCU's smallest margin since 5:59 in the first half.
High-energy scoring on both sides resulted in competing scoring runs that led to a 67-62 U-M advantage with just over five minutes left in the half. Wolf secured a double-double with his 10th rebound at 4:33. The Wolverines defense closed out the game holding TCU to 1-for-8 shooting and a scoring drought that lasted more than two minutes.
U-M shot 50 percent from the field, but only 65 percent from the free-throw line. Michigan's defense held TCU to 34 percent shooting and 26 percent from behind the three-point line. Eight players scored for the Wolverines, whose starters accounted for 60 of the team's 76 points.
