Wolverines Stifle Sharks in Midweek Win

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team capitalized off turnovers against Long Island University en route to a 96-31 win Wednesday night (Nov. 20) at Crisler Center. Michigan opened the contest on a 17-0 run and never looked back, forcing more LIU turnovers than points allowed.
The dominant offensive performance by Michigan was highlighted by a pair of 20-point performances from freshmen Olivia Olson (21) and Syla Swords (21). Brooke Quarles Daniels and Yulia Grabovskaia each had 10 points off the bench. The Wolverines shot 57.4 percent from the floor and held LIU to 27.3 percent, scoring 51 points off 32 Shark turnovers. Michigan had 20 assists on the night while turning the ball over just 13 times.
In the first quarter, back-to-back layups by Swords and an and-one by Olson started a 15-0 run for the Wolverines, taking advantage of LIU turnovers. The Wolverines pushed the lead to 17 before LIU scored their first basket with 3:58 left in the first quarter. Swords led the way in scoring with 10 points, with Olson close behind, scoring seven points while also contributing five assists, as Michigan led 29-7 after the first period of play.
Mila Holloway opened the second-quarter scoring with a jumper on Michigan's first possession of the quarter. After four minutes of back-and-forth play, an Olson layup with 6:25 left in the quarter kick-started a 16-0 run by the Wolverines to push the lead all the way to 37. Michigan led by as many as the aforementioned 37 points in the quarter, taking a 54-18 lead into the locker room.
After a slower start by Michigan after the break, a second-chance layup by Swords with 6:47 left in the quarter started yet another double-digit scoring run, with the Wolverines pushing the lead to 46. Holloway finished the quarter with a spectacular crossover and layup as the Wolverines led LIU 73-28 after three quarters of play.
The Wolverines continued to push the lead in the final quarter, starting with a Greta Kampschroeder three-pointer to open the quarter. Michigan finished the contest on a 16-0 run, highlighted by six points from Ally VanTimmeren, to provide the final 96-31 score. Nine of the 10 Wolverines who saw the floor scored in the contest.
Michigan wraps up a five-game homestand on Sunday (Nov. 24), hosting Long Beach State at 2 p.m.
