U-M Completes Homestand With Victory Over Tarleton State

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's basketball team defeated Tarleton State 72-49 on Thursday night (Nov. 21) to finish out a three-game homestand at Crisler Center.
Leaders and Best
Roddy Gayle Jr. led the Wolverines to victory with 16 points. Sam Walters and Tre Donaldson had 13 points apiece, and Vladislav Goldin added 12.
First Half
Strong defense propelled the Wolverines (4-1) to a 6-0 start, capitalizing off turnovers and missed field goals by Tarleton State (1-5). U-M held the Texans to just five points in the first five minutes of the game. Tarleton State responded by holding the Wolverines scoreless for more than four minutes and scoring eight unanswered points to tie the game at 11 with 12:29 to go.
The teams continued to alternate scoring runs, with U-M bringing its lead to seven before Tarleton State's hot streak and 4-for-4 shooting gave the Texans their first lead of the day, 24-23 with 6:54 left in the opening half. The Wolverines took advantage of four Texans turnovers in just over a minute, reclaiming the lead, 29-24 with just over five minutes remaining.
Back-to-back three-pointers by Walters opened up an 11-2 half-ending scoring run that saw Michigan make six of its last eight field-goal attempts to take a 40-30 lead at halftime.
Both teams made turnovers count in the first half, with U-M scoring 15 points off Tarleton State and the Texans returning the favor with 11 points of their own. Gayle shot 4-for-5 from the floor, providing the Wolverines with 11 points. Danny Wolf contributed five rebounds to U-M's 16 total in the first 20 minutes.
Second Half
Goldin's scored four points in the first two minutes of the second half to start another U-M scoring run for the Wolverines, who opened the half scoring 10 straight points and did not allow a Texan basket until the 15:49 mark.
A Gayle dunk at 10:13 ended a five-minute Wolverine scoreless streak, but Michigan still struggled to convert, going 1-for-11 until finally scoring back-to-back field goals with just over six minutes remaining to lead by 16, 56-40.
Despite poor shooting (10-for-25), U-M outscored the Texans 32-19 in the second half and closed the game on a 6-0 run over the final three minutes.
What's Next
U-M will travel to Fort Myers, Fla., to take on Virginia Tech in the Fort Myers Tip-Off on Monday (Nov. 25). Opening tip is set for 6 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on FS1.

• With his three blocks tonight, Goldin reached 150 for his career (151).
• Donaldson's 13-point performance marks his fifth straight double-figure game.
• Walters' three three-pointers gave him his fourth game this season with at least two three-pointers.
