DURHAM, N.C. -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team scored bonus points in all seven of its individual match wins en route to a dominant 35-11 road win against Duke on Friday night (Nov. 22) in the Jordan High School gymnasium.
Michigan earned a pin from fifth-year senior Joseph Walker at 174 pounds, five technical falls -- including in the first three bouts of the dual -- and a major decision. After several dual debuts last weekend, three more Wolverines made their debuts tonight, with junior/sophomore Codei Khawaja winning at 184 pounds, while graduate student Chase Saldate won big in his first dual with Michigan at 157 pounds.
Senior/junior Nolan Wertanen, graduate student Dylan Ragusin and sophomore Sergio Lemley opened the dual with three straight technical falls at the lowerweights. Wertanen used a big first period to roll to a 17-1 win over Ethan Grimminger at 125 pounds, scoring two takedowns and a four-point title before adding two more takedowns in the second to end it at 3:59. Ragusin, ranked fourth nationally at 133 pounds, worked even quicker with six takedowns in just 3:15 to beat Raymond Adams 19-4 for his second bonus win in as many matches this season.
Lemley, ranked eighth at 141 pounds, scored points in the waning seconds of each period to post a 17-2 technical fall over Christian Colman. He struck on a single-leg in the final 10 seconds of the first, added a four-point tilt and buzzer-beating duck under in the second and, pushing for another takedown late in the third, instead drew a stall point on the edge at the buzzer to secure the tech fall after 1:51 riding time.
Duke got on the board with a major decision at 149 pounds and added decision wins at 165 pounds and heavyweight but could not keep pace with additional Michigan bonus wins.
Saldate, ranked 12th at 157 pounds, blew it out in the third period to earn a 20-4 technical fall over KP O'Connell. Saldate piled up some points in the first period as well with two takedowns -- early and late -- and a two-point tilt. After riding out the second period, he added three more takedowns in the third, including a single leg at the buzzer to earn the tech after his 2:32 riding-time advantage.
Walker picked up his first pin of the season at 174 pounds, using a suck back to stick Gaetano Console at 4:25. Walker, ranked 27th nationally, finished on a late single leg in the first period then twice put Console on his back in the second, first returning him feet to back from rear standing before earning the suck back. He improved to 6-0 on the season.
Khawaja took advantage of a quick start to post a 12-4 major decision over Logan Richey in his first-ever collegiate dual at 184 pounds. Khawaja finished on three total takedowns, including two in the first period, and added a second-period reversal and 3:13 in riding-time advantage.
Graduate student Jacob Cardenas, ranked third at 197 pounds, earned his second technical fall in as many matches in maize and blue, cruising to a 15-0 win over Kwasi Bonsu in 4:07. He built a sizable early lead with a quick low single and two four-point turns. He scored his escape quickly in the second then shot double and finished with a single leg to end the bout. He has not allowed a point through his first two matches.
The Wolverines (2-0) will travel north to Charlottesville, Va., to take on Virginia at 7 p.m. on Sunday (Nov. 24) at Memorial Gym. The dual is slated to be streamed live on ACC Network Extra.
