WACO, Texas -- Gavin Young and Benjamin Kittay of the University of Michigan men's tennis team knocked off Alex Bulte and Youcef Rihane of Florida State in straight sets (6-4, 6-2) on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 23) to advance to the finals of the NCAA Doubles Championship.
With the win, Young and Kittay are the first Michigan men's pair to advance to the final match at the NCAA Doubles Championship.
The first set featured eight straight holds of serves between the two teams as neither could get the advantage. Michigan finally came through with a break of serve in the ninth game, taking a 5-4 lead. U-M grabbed three break points in that game, converting on the first one to put the Wolverines on the brink of the first-set win.
Kittay went back to serve out the set, with U-M winning the final three points to get the win.
The Wolverines carried that momentum forward into the next set, breaking FSU in the first game and consolidating the break in the ensuing game by winning the deuce point. It was all Michigan from there as U-M got another break at 4-1 and never looked back in the 6-2 win.
With the win, Michigan will face either Pedro Vives Marcos and Lui Maxted of TCU or Lucas Brown and Timo Legout of Texas in the final tomorrow (Sunday, Nov. 24).
