
Michigan Drops Four-Set Match at Indiana in Final Road Contest

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team fell 3-1 (22-25, 27-25, 18-25, 21-25) to Indiana in its final road contest of the season on Wednesday night (Nov. 27) at Wilkinson Hall.
Michigan (17-13, 7-12 Big Ten) was led by Jacque Boney, who tallied a career-high 17 kills doing so with just two errors for a .441 hitting percentage and added six blocks. Serena Nyambio led Michigan in blocks with seven, while Morgan Burke had five blocks and a team-leading 38 assists. Maddi Cuchran led the team with 15 digs.
Indiana (14-15, 7-12 Big Ten) won the opening point and after the teams split the first 12 points for a 6-6 score, IU took eight of the next 11 points to take a 14-9 lead. Michigan responded with four straight points led by Boney, who tallied two kills and a block assist. The Hoosiers stayed in front until U-M took five of six to take an 18-17 lead. An ace from Mira Chopra tied the match and a block assist from Kendyl Reaugh and Nyambio gave Michigan its lead. The Wolverines could not keep the lead as Indiana took the next four points to take a 21-18 lead. Michigan kept IU from two set-point wins, but after a timeout, Indiana won the first set 25-22.
The Maize and Blue started the second set with a 5-2 run, but Indiana tied the match at seven. An IU service error and kill from Vaulet kept Michigan in front until three straight Hoosiers points put them up 10-9. Michigan tied the match at 12, but IU held a lead, working it up to three points multiple times in the set. IU reached 20 points up by three, but U-M stayed in the set and took four of the next five with a Cuchran ace to tie the set at 22. IU had the first set-point chance, but a service error tied the match at 24. A kill from Ella Demetrician gave U-M its first chance to win the set, but an attack error tied the match at 25. Burke tallied a kill to give Michigan another chance and Demetrician converted with a kill to win 27-25.
Burke opened the third set with a kill and Boney put Michigan ahead 2-1 and 3-2, but after a U-M block from Burke and Nyambio at 5-4, it was all Indiana. The Hoosiers went on an 11-2 run to take a 15-7 lead. Michigan tried to respond with a 9-4 run late in the set, led by three blocks and two kills from Boney, but Indiana took the final three points of the set to win 25-18.
Indiana opened the fourth set on a 4-0 run and took a 10-4 lead early. Michigan inched its way back, stringing together two two-point runs and a three-point run to cut the IU lead to just two at 15-13. Michigan used another three-point run out of a timeout with a kill from Boney, a block from Nyambio and Demetrician and an ace from Chopra to bring the Hoosiers lead to just one, 17-16. IU took the next point, but back-to-back Michigan kills tied the match at 18 with Lydia Johnson tallying the tying kill. IU took the next point, but a kill from Nyambio tied the match at 19. A kill from Amalia Simmons tied the match at 20 after the Hoosiers took another lead and IU closed out the match on a 5-1 run to win 25-21.
The Wolverines wrap up the regular season at home against Northwestern on Friday (Nov. 29) for Senior Night. The match is slated for a 7 p.m. start and will be streamed live on B1G+.
