ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team grabbed two NCAA Singles and one NCAA Doubles Championships berths as the ITA Sectional Championships came to a close Sunday (Nov. 10) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Lily Jones and Piper Charney punched their tickets to the NCAA Singles Championship for the first times in their career, with Jones teaming up with Jessica Bernales to earn a doubles bid. Jones and Charney will join Julia Fliegner in the singles tournament after she earned her way by finishing runner-up at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships.
Charney did not drop a set over her first three rounds, winning her quarterfinal match over NO. 50-ranekd Sydni Ratliff, 6-1, 6-1, to clinch her berth. She knocked off Andreea Lila of Texas Tech in the first round and No. 112 Bojana Pozder in the second round to set up the quarterfinal match against Ratliff. Charney's run came to an end in the semifinals when she fell to No. 16-ranked Julia Garcia-Ruiz in three sets.
Jones, just like Charney, did not drop a set in her first three rounds. Jones got through to the singles championship by grinding out a 7-6 (3), 7-5 win over No. 56 Alina Shcheribinina of Oklahoma. After getting a first-set tiebreak win, Jones grabbed an early lead in the second set. Shcherbinina fought off several match points throughout the second set but Jones was able to close it out in two to earn her first NCAA Singles berth. She fell in the semifinals to No. 9-ranked Nicole Khirin in the semifinals.
Jones and Bernales will represent Michigan in the NCAA Doubles Championship after finishing runner-up in the tournament. They clinched their berth with a clinical 6-1, 6-3 win over No. 14-ranked Jade Otway and Isabel Pascual in the semifinals. After running away with the first set, they got the break the needed early in the second and kept their distance the rest of the way. The pair did not drop a set until falling to Baylor in the championship match, 8-3 in an eight-game pro-set.
The 2024 NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships will mark the end of the fall season. The tournaments are being hosted by Baylor, Nov. 19-24.
