ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The eighth-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team was blanked 4-0 by Wisconsin on Friday night (Dec. 13) at Yost Ice Arena. The loss marked the third time in as many games that the Wolverines fell in a shutout.
The teams started the night with fast-paced play as each side tested the opposing netminder. Each was awarded one power play in the opening frame, but only Wisconsin capitalized to take a 1-0 lead on the man advantage at 11:25 of the first period.
After one period of play, Michigan (10-6-1, 4-3-0 Big Ten) trailed by one goal despite leading 8-5 in shots on goal and holding the advantage in the faceoff dot (10-8).
Wisconsin, a man down thanks to a penalty late in the first period, grabbed a 2-0 lead just 20 seconds into the second -- the first short-handed goal Michigan has allowed this season. After Mark Estapa was tossed out of the right faceoff circle, the Badgers got the loose puck and fired it over the shoulder of Stein. UW added to its lead at 2:43 when a shot from the point was buried in a second-chance effort.
The Badgers (7-9-1, 5-6-0 Big Ten) converted on another power-play opportunity at 17:56 of the third period after Michigan was whistled for too many men.
Veteran goaltender Logan Stein made 24 saves on 28 shots, as Wisconsin outchanced Michigan 28-23. The Badgers went 2-for-6 on the power play while the Wolverines went 0-for-4, and had the better luck on faceoffs, winning 52 percent.
Michigan looks to get back on track Saturday (Dec. 14) when the teams reconvene at Yost Ice Arena. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on B1G+.
