ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's basketball team defeated Iowa 85-83 on Saturday (Dec. 7) at Crisler Center in the Wolverines' annual Holiday Game to finish the December slate of Big Ten play 2-0.
Leaders and Best
Five Wolverines scored in double figures and two had double-doubles. Vladislav Goldin led all Wolverines with 20 points and added 11 rebounds, while Danny Wolf had 13 points and 14 rebounds. Tre Donaldson scored a career-high 18 points and had five assists, Roddy Gayle Jr. had 17 points and five assists, while Will Tschetter added 13 points.
The Turning Point
With the game tied 83-83 with 16 seconds to go, Gayle drove to the right side of the hoop for an attempted layup, but goaltending was called on a shot block to give Michigan the lead with 4.6 seconds to go. Iowa's three-point attempt at the buzzer was no good, giving Michigan the 85-83 win.
First Half
After trading a pair of baskets to start the game, Michigan (8-1, 2-0 Big Ten) went on a 15-2 run over four and a half minutes to take an early 20-4 lead just over seven minutes in. Gayle scored the Wolverines' first five points, while Donaldson also added seven points. Before halting the run, Iowa made just one of eight field-goal attempts during a near four-minute scoring drought.
Iowa (7-2, 1-1 Big Ten) then responded with a 12-2 run of its own, cutting the U-M lead to six (24-18) with 7:43 to go. The Hawkeyes managed to claw their way back while taking care of the ball, committing two turnovers to Michigan's 11 in the first half, including four in less than two minutes.
Iowa closed out the half efficiently making seven of its last 10 shot attempts to tie the game, but a Donaldson layup as time expired gave Michigan a 40-37 lead at the break.
Second Half
Iowa took its first lead of the game at the 16:48 mark with a 45-44 advantage, but Michigan responded with eight consecutive made field goals -- including two each from Wolf and Donaldson -- to regain the lead, 63-59, with 11:43 to go.
While Michigan made five of seven field-goal attempts, the Hawkeyes converted just one of nine attempts. A fast break layup from Gayle gave the Wolverines a 74-63 lead, forcing an Iowa timeout with 7:14 remaining in the second half.
Down the stretch, the Wolverines went over five and a half minutes without a field goal, allowing Iowa to tie the game up with 16 seconds remaining. After Gayle's layup was counted with 4.6 seconds left, an Iowa three-point attempt at the buzzer was no good.
