The Wolverines (5-0) came from behind on three separate occasions as they tied the game with 2:36 left in the contest and used what would be the game-winner from Smith with 1:20 left to remain undefeated in the 2024 season.
Smith led Michigan with six goals, while Jane Fetterolf and Calli Norris scored a pair each for the Maize and Blue. U-M won the draw control battle, 12-11, with Smith and Josie Gooch winning four draws each and Lily Montemarano winning three. Junior Erin O'Grady earned her fifth straight win in the cage with nine saves on the day.
O'Grady made her first save of the day and Smith scored on the ensuing possession to allow U-M to take an early 1-0 lead. ASU forced Michigan into a turnover and found the game-tying goal with just 28 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
The Sun Devils then opened the second quarter with back-to-back goals to go up 3-1 before Fetterolf capitalized on a free position opportunity that cut the ASU lead to one with 9:14 left to play in the half. Smith took back-to-back shots and tied it up on a drive with 7:16 remaining in the quarter.
Arizona State used its second two-goal run to go into the halftime break with a 5-3 advantage over Michigan.
Coming out of the halftime break, ASU extended its lead to 6-3 before Norris scored a pair of goals that brought Michigan within one, 6-5, heading into the final 15 minutes of action. Smith opened the fourth quarter with a goal to tie the game up at 6-6, however, the Sun Devils answered on the next possession to swing the lead back in their favor.
Arizona State took a two-goal lead with just over 10 minutes to play and again Smith found the back of the cage to bring Michigan within one. ASU responded with 6:15 left in the contest to take a 9-7 advantage but it was the Wolverines for the final five minutes of action as U-M scored three goals, two from Smith, to earn the 10-9 victory.
Michigan returns to U-M Lacrosse Stadium Saturday (March 2) for a noon contest against No. 19 Colorado.
