LAFAYETTE, La. -- Paced by junior Hunter Thomson's seventh sub-par 54-hole tally (206, -10) and his third runner-up finish of the season, the University of Michigan men's golf team tallied an 865 (+1) team total to post a sixth-place finish Tuesday (March 12) at the Louisiana Classics played at the Oakbourne Country Club.
Making their fifth appearance in Louisiana's home event, the Wolverines used Thomson's opening 68 (-4) and redshirt-junior Ben Hoagland's 71 (-1) to etch a 284 (-4) on the leaderboard, positioning them third after 18 holes. Heading back out for a second 18 holes, Thomson again guided the Wolverines as his 66 (-6) not only put him in second individually, it helped U-M to a second-round 286 (-2) and kept the Maize and Blue third after 36 holes.
In the final round, an even par 72 from Thomson highlighted the round and he was aided by senior Will Anderson's' 73 (+1) to help U-M close with a 295 and an 865 (+1) total, yielding a sixth-place finish.
With his seventh sub-par 54-hole event total of 206 (-10), Thomson led the Wolverines with his third runner-up finish and fifth top-five finish this season. With his two sub-70 tallies, he now has 24 of 27 rounds at-or-below par and is averaging a program-record pace of 69.48 per round.
Behind Thomson, Anderson tied for 18th with his 217 (+1), while Hoagland tied for 32nd with his 219. It marked the third time in nine events the Maize and Blue trio finished as the top three Wolverines.
After competing in four events over the first five weeks of the spring season, the Wolverines return to Ann Arbor and will not compete for nearly a month as they prep for the end of the regular season. The next tournament for the Michigan will be Saturday and Sunday, April 6-7 at Indiana's Hoosier Collegiate Invitational in Bloomington, Ind. The two-day, 54-hole event will be played on the Pfau Course at Indiana.
