ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan softball team used an explosive eight-run fifth inning and added the clinching two runs in the sixth for a run-rule victory on Wednesday (Mar. 27), defeating the Toledo Rockets 12-3 in six innings at Alumni Field in Carol Hutchins Stadium.
Five Wolverines recorded a home run in the contest, with three coming in the bottom of the fifth. Jenissa Conway mashed two homers out of the park, recording three total RBI. Indiana Langford tied for the team lead in RBIÂ after rounding the bases on a three-run inside-the-park homer. It was Michigan's most homers in a game since also hitting six against Illinois in 2019.Â
The Rockets drove starter Jessica LeBeau out of the game in the first inning, running out to an initial 2-0 lead before Hannah George came in and got the Wolverines out of the jam. Conway got the Maize and Blue on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second with a solo shot to the deepest part of the yard, and Keke Tholl found the equalizer the next inning with her second home run in as many games, tying things at 2-2 after three full innings.
Toledo once again jumped ahead in the top of the fourth, when a sacrifice fly to the warning track of dead center field plated the Rockets' third run of the game. Maddie Erickson propelled Michigan to the lead in the bottom of the fifth, however, with a two-run line drive that just cleared the left field wall, and Lilly Vallimont added a two-run shot of her own two batters later to put the Wolverines up 6-3 with no outs. Ella McVey added a run on an RBI single, while Langford rounded out the inning's scoring with her three-run inside-the-parker, putting the Wolverines up by seven runs headed into the final two innings.
With just one run standing between the Maize and Blue and a run-rule victory in the bottom of the sixth, Conway sent the Alumni Field crowd home happy with a two-run walk-off blast, putting the Wolverines on top at a final tally of 12-3. Erin Hoehn earned the victory in the circle, keeping Toledo off the score column in two innings pitched.
The Wolverines start a four-game trip through the Hoosier State on Friday (Mar. 29), traveling first to Bloomington for a three-game series against Indiana. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 pm, and will be streamed on B1G+.
