
Big Second Inning Powers Michigan Past Maryland to Even Series

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Behind an eight-run second inning, the University of Michigan baseball team routed Maryland 12-1 to even up its three-game series with the Terrapins on Saturday (March 30) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Michigan (10-17, 3-2 Big Ten) was led by Jacob Denner (2-3), who earned the win on the strength of a 7.2-inning performance that saw him allow a single run and scatter three hits while striking out six. Seven Wolverines notched an RBI in the contest, with Collin Priest and Stephen Hrustich both blasting home runs. Cole Carsuo went 4-for-4 on the day with three doubles, a single and added two runs and a pair of RBI.
The Maize and Blue charged out of the gate in the second inning to take an 8-0 lead. The Wolverines sent 13 batters to the plate and five Wolverines plated at least a run in the frame, with AJ Garcia, Mitch Voit and Hrustich each notching two with one swing -- a double, single and home run respectively.
Michigan later crossed the double-digit mark in the bottom of the fourth off a Dylan Stanton single and Caruso's second double of the game to take a 10-0 lead after four innings.
The Terrapins ended Denner's shutout bid in the top of the fifth, when a fly ball scraped past the left-field wall for a solo home run. The Wolverines answered in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of sacrifice flies from Will Rogers and Kyle Dernedde to push the lead to 12-1, where it eventually settled.
The Wolverines will go for the series victory on Sunday (March 31) when they host the Terrapins at Ray Fisher Stadium. The series finale is scheduled for a noon start, and the game will be be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
