ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Behind a strong start from Voit on the mound and his two home runs, the University of Michigan baseball team claimed its second series victory in as many weekends on Sunday (March 31), defeating the Maryland Terrapins 9-4 at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Michigan (11-17, 4-2 Big Ten) was led offensively by Mitch Voit and Mack Timbrook who provided five runs of support off home runs in the game. Timbrook added two more hits on the day to lead the team with three. Voit also recorded the win on the mound in the contest after notching seven innings pitched with a career-high six strikeouts.
A scoreless first 1.5 innings gave way to a 2-0 Michigan lead in the bottom of the second, when Will Rogers plated one on a double, and a single from Kyle Dernedde allowed Cole Caruso to reach home safely. The Wolverines later added a third run in the third inning, when Collin Priest brought home Stephen Hrustich from second base.
Maryland (20-8, 3-3 Big Ten)Â evened the score at three in the top of the third inning off a pair of home runs -- a solo effort and a two run shot both over the left-center wall. The Terrapins' third home run of the game pushed them over the lead in the top of the next inning, but Caruso answered with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to tie the score at 4-4.
Voit provided his own support in the bottom of the sixth inning, mashing a two run bomb over the brick monster in left field to put the Wolverines up 6-4 after six innings. U-M added insurance runs in the seventh as Caruso and Rogers reached base with two outs, and Timbrook followed with a three-run home run which put the Maize and Blue out in front 9-4.
Voit was relieved by Kurt Barr in the top of the eighth inning, who recorded the final six outs of the contest while not allowing a hit, sealing the victory for Michigan.
The Wolverines host crosstown Eastern Michigan on Tuesday (April 2) in a midweek match-up scheduled for a 4:00 pm first pitch. The game will be streamed live on B1G+.
