INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The No. 16-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team closed out its final meet of the 2023-24 season on Saturday (March 30) at the NCAA Championships at IU Natatorium. U-M finished with a tally of 87.5 points to lay claim to 14th overall, moving up six places from its 2023 team result. Top-ranked Arizona State claimed its first national title in program history by scoring 523.5 points.
Four Wolverines took part in the final preliminary session of the meet, starting with Bence Szabados in the 100-yard freestyle. In his final individual race of the season, the senior clocked 42.43 seconds and finished 41st overall.
Three Michigan men hit the pool for the 200-yard butterfly. True to form, Gal Groumi easily punched his ticket to the evening's championship final, clocking a 1:40.20 and claiming the sixth seed. Fellow fly specialist Tyler Ray posted a personal-best 1:40.44 to secure a B final birth. Big Ten Freshman of the Year Colin Geer made the cut for the B final with a time of 1:41.38
Geer and Ray kicked off Saturday evening in the consolation final of the 200 fly. Geer built on the momentum he had established in his morning swim by touching the wall at 1:41.23 to finish 13th overall. Ray followed close behind with a 1:41.47 to take 14th overall. Groumi improved on his preliminary time by .15 seconds to finish on the podium at seventh overall.
Michigan put a bow in its 2023-24 season by finishing 17th overall in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The quartet of Groumi, Szabados, Eitan Ben-Shitrit and Jack Wilkening posted a mark of 2:49.62 to wrap up the campaign.
