ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team split its doubleheader against Minnesota on Saturday (April 13), winning the first game 8-1 before falling 8-3 in the nightcap, at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Kurt Barr led Michigan (16-20, 7-4 Big Ten) in the first game, going the distance and allowed one earned run with four strikeouts while scattering five Gophers hits. AJ Garcia hit his first home run as a Wolverine in game one as part of a two-run, three-RBI day while Mack Timbrook went 5-for-8 across the two games. Mitch Voit and Dylan Stanton added home runs in the opener.
Minnesota (13-15, 2-5 Big Ten) struggled offensively in game one, scoring its lone run on a sixth-inning solo home run, but jumped out to an early lead in the second game with a six-run second inning.
Barr (4-2) opened game one with a 1-2-3 first inning before Michigan got on the board in the bottom of the frame. Garcia was hit by a pitch before Voit followed with a two-run shot to left field to put Michigan up 2-0.
The Wolverines added to their lead with two sacrifice flies to push their lead to 4-0 after three innings. Kyle Dernedde plated Cole Caruso in the second, while Dylan Stanton scored Stephen Hrustich in the third. Barr cruised through the fifth inning, keeping the Gophers scoreless on three hits.
Stanton went yard to left-center in the bottom of the fifth to extend U-M's lead to 7-0. Minnesota got to Barr in the top of the sixth with a solo home run. The Wolverines got the run back on a bunt from Garcia which scored Timbrook. Barr (4-2) allowed just two baserunners over the final three frames with a double play capping off the 8-1 Michigan victory.
Minnesota scored six times in the second inning of game two to take an early lead -- the big blow a three-run home run -- and twice more in the third to take an 8-0 lead.
Michigan matched Minnesota's third-inning two-spot with one of its own. A Voit two-run single pushed Timbrook and Dernedde home to cut the lead to 8-2 after three innings.
Ricky Kidd entered the game in the fifth and pitched 3.1 scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and adding two strikeouts. U-M was held to just two baserunners over that stretch until the bottom of the seventh. Pinch-hitter Cooper Mullens drew a two-out walk and scored on a Joe Longo double to bring the score to its final resting place.
Charlie Denomme tossed 1.2 scoreless innings and Zach Slayden pitched a scoreless ninth. Timbrook singled to lead off the bottom of the ninth, but U-M was unable to mount a rally. Starter Dylan Vigue (0-3) took the loss, charged with seven runs (six earned) on six hits over two innings of work.
U-M looks for the series win against Minnesota in the rubber match on Sunday (April 14). First pitch from Ray Fisher Stadium is set for 1 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on B1G+.
