
Young Named First Team All-Big Ten

ROSEMONT, Ill. -- University of Michigan men's tennis player Gavin Young earned first team All-Big Ten honors, the conference announced Thursday (April 25).
Young owns a 10-7 record at No. 1 singles and is ranked No. 19 in the ITA singles rankings. He went 5-1 in the Big Ten this season and has a career mark of 16-5 in his career in conference singles. A native of Apple Valley, Minn., Young went 11-9 against ranked opponents this season, including a win over the No. 2-ranked singles player. This season, he had a career-best eight straight wins and has a 65-31 record in singles overall. Young and partner Jacob Bickersteth are ranked No. 16 in the ITA doubles rankings. The duo had a six-match win streak during the season and lost just once during conference play with seven victories. Young is 12-8 in his dual doubles this season and 19-10 in all doubles matches with a career record of 65-28.
The 2022 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, Young was second team All-Big Ten in both 2022 and 2023. An All-American in doubles, Young qualified for the NCAA Doubles Championship twice and NCAA Singles Championship once. He was named the Big Ten Fall Singles Champion in 2021 and the ITA Midwest Freshman of the Year in 2022. Additionally, he earned ITA Scholar-Athlete honors in 2022 and Academic All-Big Ten in 2023.
Sophomore Mert Oral was honored as Michigan's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honoree. He went 10-7 in singles and 11-8 in doubles this season.
Michigan is the No. 2 seed in this weekend's Big Ten Tournament being played in Evanston, Ill., on the campus of Northwestern. The Wolverines will face the winner of the Northwestern vs. Wisconsin match in the quarterfinals on Friday (April 26) at 1:30 p.m. CDT.
