
Thomson, Wolverines Earn Top-10 Finish at Big Ten Championships

» With the aid of a final-round 298 team tally, Michigan jumped two spots to tie for 10th with a 907 54-hole at the Big Ten Championships at the Scioto Country Club in Columbus, Ohio.
» With his 21st sub-par tally of the season, Hunter Thomson's closing 69 (-1) vaulted him 19 positions for a tie for eighth with a 219 (76-74-69) championships total. Overall, it was his ninth top-10 finish in 12 tournaments.
» Ben Hoagland (229) and Will Anderson (231) helped U-M place three among the top 50 individually, as they tied for 39th and 49th, respectively.
» U-M will wait until Wednesday (May 1) to see if it earns a team or individual bid to an NCAA Regional.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Aided by junior Hunter Thomson's top-10 individual finish, the University of Michigan men's golf team tallied a 907 54-hole team total to tie for 10th at the Big Ten Championships at the Scioto Country Club. The Wolverines, who jumped two positions, shared the 10th spot with Penn State.
Thomson ended his championship campaign on a high note with his 21st sub-par round of the season, firing a 69 (-1) -- the second-lowest tally of the final round. Despite a slow start to the start of the postseason, he climbed 19 spots on the final day to secure his second consecutive top-10 finish. With a total score of 219 (76-76-69), he posted his best-ever postseason finish, tying for eighth. Thomson has been the top-performing Wolverine in nine out of 12 events.
As redshirt junior Ben Hoagland posted a 229 total and senior Will Anderson carded a 231 total, the duo helped give the Wolverines three among the top 50 individually as they tied for 39th and 49th, respectively. Junior Yuqi Liu and senior Jude Kim rounded out the Wolverine starting five. Liu tied for 55th (233), while Kim tied for 57th (234).
Leading from start to finish and paced by Big Ten medalist Daniel Svard (211, +1), Northwestern won the Big Ten title with an 863 total. Illinois was the runner-up at 878, while Purdue was third at 886.
The Wolverines shift their focus to either a team or individual bid for an upcoming NCAA Regional selection. The 81-team field and individuals (45) will be announced on Wednesday (May 1) during the live selection show on the Golf Channel at 2 p.m.
Regional play will take place Monday through Wednesday, May 13-15 at six different regional sites. The top five teams (a total of 30 teams) and the top individual not on an advancing team (six total) will advance to play in the NCAA Finals at the Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.
