ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team fell to Iowa 3-2 in a pitchers' duel on Friday afternoon (April 5th) at Duane Banks Field in the series opener.
Michigan (12-18, 4-3 Big Ten) had strong performances on the mound from Dylan Vigue and Kurt Barr. Vigue pitched a career-high five innings and struck out one and allowed just one earned run. Barr pitched 4.1 and allowed just one earned run.
U-M tallied five hits on the day with Dylan Stanton reaching base three times.
Iowa (16-11, 5-2 Big Ten) struck first in the bottom of the second. The Hawkeyes doubled and singled to take the 1-0 lead. The Wolverines got a baserunner in both the second and third innings but could not convert. Vigue kept the Hawkeyes from scoring in the third after forcing a groundout to end the inning and leaving two one.
The Wolverines got on the board in the top of the fourth. Collin Priest was hit by a pitch with one out and advanced to second on a walk. Will Rogers singled to the shortstop, and U-M loaded the bases with one out. Caruso singled to center field, allowing Priest to score from third and tie the game at one. A pickoff at third and strikeout ended the inning. Vigue returned to the mound and kept Iowa scoreless in the inning after a walk.
U-M took its first lead of the game in the fifth inning as Mitch Voit drew a one-out walk. He advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Stanton single to put Michigan up 2-1. The Hawkeyes got the run back in the bottom of the fifth after a walk, double and a groundout. Vigue was able to hold the Hawkeyes to just one run in the inning after a flyout and groundout ended the inning.
Both teams went to their bullpens in the sixth. Barr entered the game with a runner on in the sixth and after a single and intentional walk, the Wolverines turned a 4-3 double play to end the inning.
Stephen Hrustich reached second base on an error with two outs in the seventh but was unable to score, and Barr sent down the Hawkeyes in order to get Michigan back to bat.
After 1-2-3 innings on both sides in the eighth, Mack Timbrook doubled to lead off the ninth inning. Kyle Dernedde laid down a sacrifice bunt which advanced Timbrook to third, but a flyout and groundout stranded Timbrook there.
The Hawkeyes had a chance to take the lead after a leadoff single in the bottom of the ninth, but Dernedde threw home as Will Rogers applied the tag for the second out of the inning. Barr forced a flyout to left field to strand two runners on and send the game to extra innings. A leadoff walk put the Wolverines in a good spot, but a fielder's choice got out the lead runner, and a flyout and foul-out ended the top of the 10th.
A groundout started the bottom of the 10th for Iowa, but the next three batters reached as a single walked off the game. Â
U-M will play a doubleheader tomorrow against Iowa to close the three-game conference series with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. CT and streamed live on B1G+.
