
Michigan Sweeps Doubleheader, Earns Series Win at Iowa

» Michigan took both games of a doubleheader in Iowa City on Saturday, defeating the Hawkeyes 4-3 and 10-6.

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Behind a combined 19 hits and using just three pitchers, the University of Michigan baseball team took both games of its doubleheader against Iowa, winning 4-3 and 10-6 on Saturday (April 6) at Duane Banks Field.
With the sweep of the twinbill, the Wolverines earned the series win.
Michigan (14-18, 6-3 Big Ten) got through both games on the arms of game one starter Mitch Voit (6.1 innings, three runs allowed, five strikeouts, Will Rogers, who earned the save in the first game and pitched two innings to start game two, and Jacob Denner, who pitched the final seven innings and allowed just two earned runs while striking out five. Collin Priest tallied three hits on the day two RBIs and two runs, including a game-one home run.
Iowa (16-13, 5-4 Big Ten) got out to early leads in both games but were unable to hold them. Hawkeyes pitchers tallied 30 strikeouts on the day but walked 15 U-M batters and allowed 19 hits.
U-M trailed 6-5 with two outs and a runner on third in the top of the eighth. The Wolverines strung together five RBI hits and took a 10-6 lead. Denner limited the Hawkeyes to just one runner over the next two innings to complete the doubleheader sweep and earn Michigan the series victory.
In game one, the Hawkeyes got out to an early two-run lead after plating single runs in each of the first two innings.
The Wolverines got on the board in the third inning, with the big blow coming courtesy of a two-run homer to right from Priest to tie the game. U-M took the lead on a bases-loaded walk later in the frame to grab a 3-2 lead. Voit fired a 1-2-3 inning and kept the Hawkeyes scoreless for the first time in the game.
U-M added to its lead in the fifth when Rogers drew a two-out walk and after a single and walk, scored on another walk to put Michigan up 4-2. The Hawkeyes got one run back in the bottom half to cute the U-M lead to 4-3. After collecting hid fifth strikeout of the game, Voit gave way to Rogers, who helped keep the Hawkeyes scoreless in the seventh.
Rogers held Iowa scoreless the rest of the way, including a 1-2-3 ninth to pick up his second save of the season.
The Wolverines started game two taking a quick 1-0 lead. AJ Garcia led off the game with a single and scored on a Stanton single.
Rogers picked up where he left off in game one, taking the ball for the Wolverines in game two and tossing a 1-2-3 first inning. He gave up the tying run in the second inning but kept Iowa from adding to it.
The Hawkeyes took the lead, scoring twice to nab a 3-1 lead after three innings.
The Wolverines got one back in the fifth on a Voit double scoring Kyle Dernedde. Jacob Denner relieved Rogers in the third and fired a five-pitch inning to keep the score 3-2.
The Wolverines took a 5-3 lead in the sixth on a two-run triple from Brock Leitgeb, who scored on the next pitch which got by the catcher. The Hawkeyes tied the game in the bottom of the frame and took a 6-5 lead in the seventh.
In the top of the eighth, Timbrook singled to open the frame and moved to third after a sacrifice bunt. U-M then collected five straight two-out RBI hits to go ahead 10-6. Garcia, Voit, and Hrustich all doubled home a run, and Priest plated a run with a single to score pinch-runner Trevor Kilinski pinch-ran for Priest and scored on a Stanton single to left field.
Denner kept the Hawkeyes scoreless over the final two innings to help the Wolverines clinch the weekend series in Iowa City.
U-M will return home for a five-game homestand starting on Tuesday (April 9) against Western Michigan. First pitch from the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium, is scheduled for 4 p.m. and the game will be streamed live on B1G+.
