ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team earned a series-tying 7-6 walk-off victory over Purdue on Saturday (May 11) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
After Jacob Denner struck out a Purdue batter to get out of a jam in the top of the ninth, U-M loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame. AJ Garcia fell behind in the count but worked it full before earning a walk-off walk to score Stephen Hrustich from third.
Collin Priest went 4-for-5 -- three of his hits went for extra bases -- with two RBI, while Hrustich collected two hits and a pair of RBI. Jonathan Kim and Mack Timbrook adding an RBI each. Jacob Denner (7-4) earned the win, going 5.1 innings in relief of starter Chase Allen.
The Wolverines (27-24, 12-8 Big Ten) scored their initial run of the contest in the bottom of the first, when a single from Priest brought Hrustich home from second base. The Boilermakers responded with a run in the second to tie the game at one, and two innings later plated two runs to take a 3-1 lead.
The lead was short-lived as four Michigan baserunners crossed the plate in the bottom of the fourth. Will Rogers led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly from Timbrook. A Kim single brought home Kyle Dernedde, who doubled, and a two-run home run from Hrustich gave Michigan a 5-3 lead.
Purdue (33-18, 13-7 Big Ten) once again tied things up in the top of the fifth inning, scoring twice on a double and single, respectively, before taking back the lead, 6-5, in the top of the seventh.
Priest knotted the game once again with one swing of the bat, blasting the first pitch he saw over the left-field wall. Denner allowed Purdue just one run over the final four innings and struck out three Boilermakers -- the last ending the ninth inning and setting the stage for U-M's walk-off win.
Michigan seeks a series victory over Purdue and will celebrate its senior class on Sunday (May 12). Senior Day festivities will commence at 12:35 p.m., and first pitch at Ray Fisher Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m. The game will be streamed live on B1G+.
