BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The University of Michigan baseball team ended the regular season with a loss against Indiana on Friday (May 17th) at Bart Kaufman Stadium, falling 8-4.
Michigan (30-26, 14-10 Big Ten) started Dylan Vigue on the mound who pitched 1.1 innings and suffered the loss in the contest, falling to 2-4 on the season. Collin Priest homered in the game for his 11th of the season and third of the weekend to set a new Michigan freshman record for single-season home runs.
Indiana (30-22-1, 15-9 Big Ten) got on the board early in the contest. After leaving two on in the first, the first four Hoosiers reached in the second. After a fielder's choice got one out in the inning, IU took a 3-0 lead on a three-run home run.Â
The Wolverines responded in the top of the third with a leadoff double from Dylan Stanton. Brock Leitgeb followed and reached on a throwing error by the third baseman with one out. Stanton was retired on a fielder's choice before an errant throw by the third baseman allowed Leitgeb to score and Jonathan Kim got to second, but a strikeout ended the inning.
IU answered with two solo home runs in the third and a solo shot to lead off the fourth to take a 6-1 lead after four innings of play, but Michigan cut the IU lead to 6-3 in the top of the fifth. After a strikeout to open the frame, Stanton drew a walk and Dernedde followed with a home run to left field for his fourth of the season. IU responded with a two-run home run in the home half of the inning, going up 8-3.
Michigan got a great chance in the seventh inning as two walks and an error loaded the bases but a long flyout on the warning track left all three on. Priest added a home run with one out in the eighth for his 11th of the season to set a new freshman record for Michigan.Â
Ricky Kidd pitched a scoreless eighth to give Michigan a chance in the ninth, but the Wolverines were retired in order.
Michigan will now head to Omaha, Neb. for the Big Ten Tournament which begins on Tuesday (May 21) at Charles Schwab Field. With many games in the Big Ten's regular season still to be played on Saturday (May 18), U-M's opponent and seed for the tournament have not yet been determined.
