INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The University of Michigan rowing program earned a bid to the 2024 NCAA Rowing Championships, the NCAA announced on Tuesday (May 21). The Wolverines solidified their place in the championship regatta with their 189-point performance at the Big Ten Championships on Sunday (May 19), earning the ninth conference title in program history.
U-M will travel to Bethel, Ohio, to compete in the three-day championship regatta (May 31-June 2) hosted by Marietta College and the Cincinnati USA Sports Commission. Races will be held at East Fork/Harsha Lake.
The event marks the first time the NCAA event has taken place in Ohio. It is the sixth time the event has been in the Midwest overall, with all five previous championships happening in Indianapolis, most recently in 2019.
In addition to U-M and the other 10 schools that received automatic bids by way of a conference championship, 11 programs were awarded at-large selections. U-M is one of 22 teams represented overall, and the selection is Michigan's 16th straight postseason bid. Indiana, Ohio State, and Rutgers joined Michigan as Big Ten programs to make the field.
Competitions include the first varsity eight, the second varsity eight, and the first varsity four events. The three boats from each school will compete for individual national titles while earning points toward the overall team championship.
U-M enters the event as the No. 11 seed in the first varsity eight. The Wolverines will be the No. 10 seed in the second varsity eight and the No. 6 seed in the first varsity four.
The team will make its way to Ohio in the coming days to maximize training time on-site ahead of the championship races.
