OMAHA, Neb. -- In walk-off fashion in the bottom of the 10th inning, the No. 4-seed University of Michigan baseball team defeated the No. 5-seed Iowa Hawkeyes 3-2 on Wednesday (May 22nd) at Charles Schwab Field in the Wolverines' Big Ten Tournament opener.
Jonathan Kim led off the bottom of the 10th inning with a single and scored for the walk-off victory after three straight walks moved him around the bases.
With the win, Michigan will face No. 8-seeded Penn State on Thursday (May 23) at Charles Schwab Field with the first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. CT. The game will air live on Big Ten Network.
Kurt Barr and Jacob Denner led Michigan (31-26) to victory on the mound. Barr got the start and threw 6.1 innings, scattering six hits and two runs while striking out four in a no-decision. Denner relieved Barr and pitched the final 3.2 scoreless frames to pick up his ninth win of the season with four strikeouts. Offensively, U-M had six hits and five walks with Mitch Voit reaching a team-leading four times, including earning the final walk-off walk in the win.
Iowa (31-22) took the lead in the second after a bunt single and an RBI double. The Hawkeyes and Brody Brecht kept the U-M bats quiet with just two Wolverines recording hits until the sixth inning. The Wolverines had chances throughout and left two runners on in both the third and fourth innings. After the blemish in the second, Barr controlled the Hawkeyes and allowed just three Iowa batters to reach until the seventh.
Stephen Hrustich led off the sixth inning with a hit-by-pitch and moved to second on a single from Collin Priest. Voit drew a walk to load the bases before a wild pitch allowed Hrustich to score and an error on the throw allowed Priest to reach home and give U-M the lead. The lead was short-lived, however, as the Hawkeyes answered in the seventh with a leadoff walk and an RBI double. Denner then entered in relief and allowed a single but got a groundout and a popout to end the inning.
The Wolverines had a runner on base in the seventh, eighth and ninth but could not convert until the 10th. Denner allowed a single in the eighth but pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to set up extra innings.
In the top of the tenth inning, Denner retired the first two batters before a single allowed the go-ahead run to reach base. The Hawkeyes recorded a double but a relay throw from AJ Garcia to Mack Timbrook to Will Rogers got the runner out at home to prevent the Hawkeyes from scoring.
