ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Savannah Sutherland of the University of Michigan women's track and field team was named the Big Ten Women's Track Athlete of the Year for the second straight year, as announced by the conference Thursday (June 13).
Sutherland was the 400-meter hurdles runner-up at the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Championships, setting personal bests in both the semifinals (54.04 seconds) and the finals (53.26). Both performances set the program and Canadian national standards for the event. Her time in the finals is the fifth-fastest time in NCAA history, the fastest in Big Ten history, and the fourth fastest in the world.
The junior had another strong season, winning the Big Ten 400-meter hurdles title for the second year in a row. Sutherland also set the Kentucky Track and Field Complex facility record and the NCAA East Preliminary Round meet record (54.61) on her way to qualifying for the national championships.
With the collegiate season completed, Sutherland will turn her attention to Olympic qualification. She has met the Olympic standard of 54.85 three times this season and will look to the Bell Track & Field Trials in Montreal from June 26-30 for a spot on the Team Canada roster.
