ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Darryl Conway, the University of Michigan Executive Senior Associate Athletic Director and Chief Health and Welfare Officer, was inducted into the National Athletic Trainers' Association Hall of Fame on Wednesday night (June 26).
Conway was among seven inductees in this year's class, alongside Michigan graduate Jiro Shikakura ('77), as the seventh and eighth inductees from U-M, respectively. Conway is the eighth African-American inductee and the 15th person of color to be inducted.
"I am truly honored to receive this honor from the NATA and to join this prestigious group of athletic trainers as the 407th inductee in NATA history," said Conway upon learning of his induction. "I am also honored to continue the rich tradition from the University of Michigan in joining my fellow 2024 inductee Jiro Shikakura ('77) as inductees from Michigan.
"Michigan is a special place, and I am blessed to be a small part of its success and to work for such a great group of professionals in providing comprehensive health and welfare services for student-athletes."
The National Athletic Trainers' Association Hall of Fame exists to recognize the very best of the profession. Induction into the Hall of Fame honors athletic trainers who exemplify the mission of NATA through significant, lasting contributions that enhance the quality of health care provided by athletic trainers and advance the profession.
Further on Wednesday, the organization's 22-year-old position statement on emergency action plan development and implementation in sport was updated, with Conway among eight contributors led by West Virginia's Samantha Scarneo-Miller. The position statement revisions are intended to recommend the ongoing design of an emergency action plan coordinator who collaborates with other athletic staff to enhance athletic venue-specific plans to include variables for each sport and comprehensive documentation of incidents.
Published in the National Athletic Trainers' Association Journal of Athletic Training, the position statement provides a framework for emergency action plan development and implementation. This includes recommendations for preparing an on-site emergency response for healthcare professionals and other stakeholders to catastrophic or potentially catastrophic injuries in a pre-hospital setting.
The position statement includes several updates and recommendations. Instead of a one-size-fits-all approach, it offers general guidelines that teams can tailor to their specific settings and best use of resources.
Now finishing his 11th year at Michigan and in his 31st year overall as a certified athletic trainer, Conway oversees all of U-M's athletic training, strength and conditioning, mental health services, nutrition and dietician units, physical therapy, rehabilitation and equipment operations.
