ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team rolled to a 6-0 decision against Ohio in its return home on Friday evening (Sept. 13) in front of 560 fans at Phyllis Ocker Field. It extends U-M's win streak to four in a row and was its third straight with five goals or more.
The Wolverines (4-1) earned goals from four different scorers, including three in the fourth quarter, and converted twice on four penalty corners. Graduate student Kate McLaughlin posted a pair of goals -- her second multi-goal effort in three games -- while sophomore/freshman Payton Maloney tallied the first marker of her collegiate career.
After a bit of a slow start and evenly played first quarter, Michigan broke through with two goals in the second. Fifth-year senior Pilar Oliveros converted on U-M's third corner attempt of the game at the 19:53 mark, receiving a pass from sophomore stopper Abby Burnett on the left side of the arc and sweeping it in to the near side. McLaughlin tallied her first of the game at 26:34 on a blistering reverse shot that hit the crossbar and dropped down into the goal.
Junior/sophomore Abby Tamer used a solo effort in the circle to keep Michigan's momentum going early in the third quarter at 36:39. She carried the ball in from the left side and once she reached the post, causally lifted a shot over the Bobcat goalkeeper and to the net. It was her fifth goal of the season.
McLaughlin earned an assist on graduate student Erin Reilly's corner goal -- a rocketed direct shot that hit the goalie and deflected high at 45:48 -- then scored her second tally of the game less than two minutes later, at 47:26. Tamer again carried the ball in from the left and fed the ball to the far post, where McLaughlin tipped it in for her team-best seventh goal of the season.
Maloney wrapped up the game's scoring at the 49:38 mark. Tamer fired a hard shot from the middle that rebounded high off the goalie and Maloney, camped on the right post, tipped it in out of the air. She is the seventh different Wolverine player to record a goal so far this season.
Michigan outshot the Bobcats 24-6 and outcornered them 5-3. Sophomore/freshman Hala Silverstein and senior/junior Caylie McMahon combined for two saves -- both in the first quarter -- for the Wolverines' first shutout win of the season. Ohio (2-3) also played a pair of goalkeepers and combined for 10 saves on 16 Michigan shots on goal.
The Wolverines will wrap up its weekend homestand on Sunday (Sept. 15) at 1 p.m. when they host in-state foe Central Michigan at Ocker Field. Admission to the game is free, and it will be streamed live on B1G+.
