ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team scored a season-high 11 goals, including six in the first quarter, en route to an 11-0 win over in-state foe Central Michigan on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 15) in front of 533 fans at Phyllis Ocker Field. It was the Wolverines' second straight shutout and pushed their win streak to five straight games.
Graduate student Erin Reilly is the third Wolverine player to record a hat trick over the last four games, scoring a career-best three goals, all on direct corner shots. The Wolverines converted five of their nine penalty-corner opportunities. Senior/junior Abby Tamer tallied two goals and three assists, while graduate student Kate McLaughlin posted two goals and two assists.
It was the Wolverines' greatest goal output since similarly scoring 11 against the Chippewas last season, which was also the last time U-M did not allow a shot in a game.
Michigan scored just 59 seconds into the game and tallied four goals over a 2:30 stretch late in the opening quarter. McLaughlin posted the first and game-winning goal, taking a pass from Tamer on the right side and banging it past the CMU goalkeeper on the doorstep. She inserted on back-to-back corner goals at 3:33 and 10:46, as did senior/junior Claire Taylor with the stop, as Reilly rocketed direct shots to the board from the top of the circle.
Tamer had a hand in four of U-M's first six goals. She scored her first goal at the 11:35 mark, batting a corner rebound out of the air, then just 32 seconds later, at 12:08, fed a ball to the middle of the CMU circle, where sophomore Esmée de Willigen tipped it in for her first goal of the season. Tamer scored again at 13:16 -- less than two minutes after her first -- on a reverse shot from the middle. Tamer owns seven goals through six games -- just two shy of her career best.
The Wolverines added two more goals early and late in the second quarter. Sophomore Natalie Millman tallied her first of the season at 17:42 on a reverse shot off her own rebound on the left side of the circle. Fifth-year senior Pilar Oliveros scored off a broken corner at 27:16; freshman Anjolie Norton tracked down the ball off a mistrap, dished it to Oliveros, who swept in a hard shot from the top of the circle. It was Oliveros' career-high fourth goal and Norton's first collegiate point.
Michigan scored twice in the final two minutes of the third quarter, with a roofed McLaughlin reverse chip from the left side of the arc at 43:13 -- her career-best and team-high ninth goal of the season -- and another Reilly corner shot from the top of the circle with just two seconds left in the frame. Reilly also owns a career high with five goals through six games.
Freshman Cami Wiseman closed out scoring with her first collegiate goal early in the fourth quarter, at the 47:50 mark, knocking in a rebound that kicked off the goalie's pads and right to her on the left post. Ten different Wolverine players have scored at least one goal this season, including seven different players in today's game.
Michigan outshot the Chippewas, 27-0, and outcornered them, 9-0. Sophomore/freshman Hala Silverstein and senior/junior Caylie McMahon played a half apiece and combined for U-M's second shutout of the season. CMU also played two goalies, who combined for eight saves on 19 shots on goal.
The Wolverines (5-1) will open Big Ten Conference play at Michigan State next Monday, Sept. 23, at Ralph Young Field in East Lansing, Mich. The game is slated for a 3 p.m. and will air live on the Big Ten Network.
