ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team kicked off Big Ten Conference play with a 3-0 shutout against in-state rival Michigan State on Monday afternoon (Sept. 23) at the Spartans' Ralph Young Field. It was the Wolverines' sixth straight win and third consecutive shutout.
Freshman Eva Bernardy and graduate student Lora Clarke each posted a goal and an assist, while senior/junior Abby Tamer scored the Wolverines' first and game-winning goal, drawing the penalty stroke that led to their final marker.
Tamer broke through at 7:30 in the first quarter with a touch inside the circle. Bernardy took a free hit just past the Michigan State 25 and sent it into the circle. Tamer, one-on-one with a Spartan defender, redirected the ball to the lower left corner of the cage. It was her eighth goal of the season.
Bernardy added her first collegiate goal at 22:22 in the second quarter off a penalty corner. Clarke inserted the ball to sophomore stopper Abby Burnett, and Bernardy swept a hard shot past the MSU goalkeeper on the near right side.
Michigan's final goal came at 37:16 in the third quarter. Tamer carried the ball into the circle, drawing three Spartan defenders and a penalty stroke. Clarke took the stroke and buried it on the left side for her first goal of the season.
Senior/junior Caylie McMahon entered in the fourth quarter and posted three saves in the final 3:37 to preserve the shutout. She made a critical save on an MSU break, sliding out of the cage to stop the shot, and then saved a Spartan penalty stroke—her second career stroke save.
Michigan outshot the Spartans 24-11 and held an 11-6 edge in penalty corners. McMahon and sophomore/freshman Hala Silverstein combined for five saves in the shutout. MSU split time between two goalkeepers, stopping seven of 10 shots on goal.
The Wolverines (6-1, 1-0 Big Ten) will return home to kick off a four-game homestand, starting with Miami (Ohio) at 1 p.m. Sunday (Sept. 29) at Phyllis Ocker Field. Admission is free for all regular-season home games, and the contest will be streamed live on B1G+.
