U-M Stays Unbeaten, Takes Out Oakland in Four Sets

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- With two big set wins, the University of Michigan volleyball team took three out of four against Oakland (25-12, 22-25, 25-18, 25-11) on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 15) in Cliff Keen Arena to improve to 9-0 on the season.
Michigan (9-0) had a strong attack hitting a season-high .409 led by Allison Jacobs with 20 kills. Serena Nyambio tallied nine kills and no errors on 13 swings while Jacque Boney added 12 kills. Burke registered 39 assists in the match and added 12 digs for her second straight double-double. Maddi Cuchran led the team with 16 digs.
The Wolverines took an early 3-0 lead, but Oakland (3-6) tied the match at three. Michigan controlled the rest of the set and did not let the Golden Grizzlies back in the first set. With strong service runs from Nyambio and Cuchran, and kills from Boney and Jacobs, the Wolverines took a 16-10 lead, forcing an Oakland timeout. Out of the timeout, two kills from Jacobs and Kendyl Reaugh forced another timeout with the Wolverines up, 22-12. Michigan took the last three points of the set with Cuchran at the line with a kill from Jacobs, Reaugh and an ace for Cuchran.
In the second set, both teams battled with eight tied scores and six lead changes. Michigan got out to a fast start -- going up, 10-3 -- highlighted by a 4-0 run with Nyambio at the service line, which saw her register her first career ace. Oakland took a timeout after back-to-back kills from Jacobs put U-M up, 10-3. The Grizzlies fought back and went on an 11-5 run tying the score up at 15 and forcing a U-M timeout. With the score tied at 21, Oakland took a two-point lead which was all it needed to win the second set, 25-22.
The third set started out even with the teams splitting the first 16 points evenly. With the score tied at eight, Michigan went on a 7-2 run led by Amalia Simmons , who tallied a block and a kill on the run. After an Oakland timeout, Trixie McMillin tallied an ace, and a block from Jacobs and Boney put Michigan up, 17-10. U-M took the final five points -- then needed with three kills from Jacobs and two from Nyambio -- winning the third set, 25-18.
Michigan controlled the fourth set of the match, starting on a 5-1 run, with aces from Burke and Ella Demetrician. Oakland called a timeout but could not find a spark to get back in the set as U-M went on a 13-5 run, which forced the second timeout of the set. A Maize and Blue service error gave Oakland the serve out of the timeout, but Jacobs won the next point with a kill. McMillin went on a 4-0 run from the line to put U-M up, 23-9, with an ace and two kills from Boney. Oakland won two more points in the set but a Boney and Burke block sealed the set and the match win.
Michigan will return to action on Friday (Sept. 20) in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge against North Carolina in Chapel Hill, starting at 7 p.m.
