TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The University of Michigan women's cross country team earned a first-place finish at the John McNichols Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 21) at LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course.
U-M claimed two of the top five finishes in the seven-team field and posted 23 points. Host Indiana State finished second (62), while Miami (Ohio) finished third (79), Eastern Illinois was fourth (124), and Vermont finished fifth (111).
Junior Rylee Tolson led the way for the Wolverines, finishing first with a personal best time of 20:53.3. Mary Caroline Heinen had another solid race, finishing fifth (21:10.9), while Penelopea Gordon finished sixth (21:14.0). Both Tolson and Gordon recorded personal bests, with Tolson shaving 43 seconds of her previous best and Gordon shedding more than two minutes.
Brooke Johnston earned a seventh place finish with a time of 21:18.0, while Jadyn Zdanavage finished eighth with a time of 21:27.2 -- both in their second races for U-M. In their Maize and Blue debuts, Anjali Hocker Singh finished ninth (21:30.1) and Natalie VanOtteren finished 10th (21:33.6).
Michigan will hit the road for its next meet, heading to the Nuttycombe Invitational hosted by Wisconsin on Sept. 21.
