ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team scored three goals off its attack penalty corner and used some late grit for a hard-fought 3-2 win over Miami on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 29) in front of 549 fans at Phyllis Ocker Field. It was the Wolverines' seventh consecutive victory.
The Wolverines (7-1) built a 2-0 halftime lead and never trailed in a frenzied game that featured 24 total minutes of green/yellow cards, though Miami twice pulled within one goal, including late in the fourth quarter. U-M outshot the RedHawks, 12-6, and outcornered them, 7-5. Four of the game's five goals came on penalty corners, while Miami's first goal was a penalty stroke called following a corner.
Michigan broke through on its first corner late in the first quarter, at 13:59, when graduate student Erin Reilly buried the direct shot from the top of the arc for her sixth goal of the season. Senior/junior Claire Taylor and graduate student Lora Clarke earned assists on the stop and insert, respectively.
Fifth-year senior Pilar Oliveros added another corner goal at the 18:54 mark, early in the second quarter, for her fifth of the season. Sophomore stopper Abby Burnett fed her the ball to the right side of the arc, and Oliveros swept a shot into the opposite lower corner.
Miami got on the board early in the third quarter, at 33:42, drawing a penalty stroke on a blocked shot on the goal, then converted the stroke to the top left corner of the cage.
The Wolverines reestablished their two-goal lead at 39:41 with a goal rebound from sophomore Juliette Manzur. Michigan worked the ball to Manzur, who fired a shot into the goalkeeper's pads then knocked in her own rebound for her second of the season. Miami responded quickly, a little more than a minute later at the 40:51 mark on a corner sweep from the top right side of the circle.
The teams combined just two total shots in the fourth quarter, and the biggest stop belonged to sophomore/freshman goalkeeper Hala Silverstein, who saved a point-blank Miami shot from the right post. Silverstein earned two saves in the contest, while RedHawk goalkeeper Nicky Sjouken stopped three of six Michigan shots on goal.
The Wolverines will wrap up their homestand next Sunday (Oct. 6) when they host rival Ohio State at 1 p.m. at Ocker Field. Admission is free, and the game will be streamed live on B1G+.
