PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- The No. 25-ranked University of Michigan men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with host Rutgers on Saturday (Sept. 28) in rainy and windy conditions at Yurcak Field.
Oliver Martin scored his second goal of the season on assists from Duilio Herrera and Beto Soto. Herrera's assist marks his first point of the season, while Soto has tallied a point in eight straight matches. In goal, Isaiah Goldson notched five saves and allowed just one goal against the Scarlet Knights.
Despite the wet conditions, both teams came out firing, combining for 20 shots in the first half alone. The Scarlet Knights (3-5-2, 0-2-1 Big Ten) were responsible for 16 shots, with six attempts on target. Michigan (5-0-3, 1-0-3 Big Ten) found the first goal of the match in the 14th minute when Soto slid a pass into the middle of the penalty box, and Martin capitalized on the opportunity to give U-M a 1-0 lead.
Rutgers quickly responded as a long shot by Nestor Cabrera took a deflection and caromed into the net, knotting the game at one. Both teams had opportunities to take the lead, but the score remained 1-1 at halftime.
Michigan gained control of possession in the second half, out-shooting Rutgers 5-3, but was unable to find the breakthrough winner. Rutgers appeared to have drawn a crucial penalty in the 82nd minute, but the call was overruled after a replay review. Neither team managed another shot the rest of the way, as the match ended in a 1-1 tie—the third straight draw for the Maize and Blue.
Up next, Michigan returns to Ann Arbor to take on rival Ohio State on Friday (Oct. 4) at 7 p.m. at U-M Soccer Stadium.
