BOSTON, Mass. -- Graduate student Kate McLaughlin scored her second collegiate hat trick to headline the No. 12-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team's 5-2 win over Boston University. Friday evening's (Sept. 6) match-up at the Terriers' New Balance Field was the first road game of the season for U-M.
McLaughlin scored two of her three goals on penalty corners, while the Wolverines tallied four total goals off their corner attack in the contest. Senior/junior Abby Tamer also tallied two goals and an assist -- both on first-half penalty corners. With four goals already on the season, McLaughlin is approaching her 2023 season total (6) through just three games.
Both teams scored twice in a frenzied first quarter. Tamer gave the Wolverines an early lead on their second of back-to-back corners at the 2:32 mark. She took the insert from McLaughlin and hammered a hard shot from the left side of the arc that deflected off a stick in front and went high into the cage for her second goal of the season.
But the Terriers responded with two goals in the next 1:38 -- just than 30 seconds apart. BU drew a penalty stroke off its lone corner attempt of the game, converting it at 3:46, then used a long run down the left sideline to work the ball back into the Michigan circle and score on a tap-in redirection from the right post at the 4:10 mark.
With Michigan pouring on pressure after the BU goals, McLaughlin broke through the even the score at 10:05, inserting then getting her stick on senior Alana Richardson's corner shot to tip it past Terrier goalkeeper Kate Thompson.
McLaughlin teamed with Tamer to put the Wolverines ahead early in the second quarter, at 17:18, on another penalty corner. McLaughlin inserted to Tamer on the left side of the arc, got it right back and knocked into the BU cage. She then wrapped up the hat trick at the 43:30 mark. U-M swung the ball around to the left sideline and up to sophomore Esmée de Willigen in the corner. She banged a hard pass into the circle, which McLaughlin received in the middle and ripped a low reverse shot for her third goal.
Tamer closed out scoring early in the fourth quarter, at 45:38, with a corner tip in front of the cage. Fifth-year senior Pilar Oliveros drilled a hard shot from the arc, got her own rebound back and sent a reverse chip high. Tamer got her stick on it in the air and directed it into the goal. It was Tamer's fourth career multi-goal game.
Michigan out-shot the Terriers, 21-4, and out-cornered them, 10-1. Sophomore/freshman Hala Silverstein and senior/junior Caylie McMahon both appeared in goal and combined for one save, while BU's Thompson stopped 12 of 17 U-M shots on goal.
Michigan (2-1) will wrap up its east-coast road swing at Providence on Sunday (Sept. 8), taking on the Friars at noon at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. The game will be streamed live on FloSports.
