Notes
• The Wolverines split their games in their ACC/Big Ten Challenge games at home last weekend (Aug. 30-Sept. 1), falling to No. 2 North Carolina (4-1) before surging past No. 18 Wake Forest (2-1) at Ocker Field. Michigan, which had won just twice against the perennial ACC powers over the event's first 14 years, have since gone 8-8 at the annual kickoff since 2016.
• Sophomore Juliette Manzur scored the Wolverines' lone goal against North Carolina, tipping in a corner shot to pull U-M within a goal at the 31:18 mark early in the third quarter. It was the second straight year that Manzur scored Michigan's first goal of the season. She posted a first-quarter tally against the Tar Heels in her collegiate debut last season.
• Senior/junior Abby Tamer posted a goal and an assist in U-M's win over Wake Forest, scoring the game-winning goal at 44:57 -- with just three seconds remaining in the third quarter. Freshman Eva Bernardy rifled a free hit into the circle from the right side, it hit a Wake stick in front of the cage and deflected high to Tamer, who knocked it out of the air and batted it to the lower right corner.
• It was Tamer's first Michigan action in two years after she Olympic redshirted the 2023 collegiate season while training with U.S. Women's National Team. The Wolverines' first ever field hockey Olympian, Tamer started all five games at forward in Paris and led Team USA in scoring with two goals.
• Graduate student Kate McLaughlin also scored on a first-quarter penalty corner against Wake Forest, inserting then tipping in a shot from the left post just 48 seconds after the Demon Deacons had taken the initial lead. McLaughlin shared the team lead last season with six goals; she now has 15 in her career.
• Two of Michigan's three goals over the opening weekend came on its attack corner. The Wolverines converted one of seven chances in each game. On the other side, U-M allowed just one corner goal over 10 combined attempts on the weekend.
• Sophomore/freshman goalkeeper Hala Silverstein registered seven saves in her collegiate debut against UNC, including three in the third quarter, and faced just four total shots -- one on goal -- against the Demon Deacons. Senior/junior Claire Taylor also posted a defensive save in the fourth quarter against Carolina when a rebound shot went high and hit her front stick on the goal line.
• Seven Michigan newcomers earned their first collegiate playing time over the Wolverines' opening weekend: Bernardy, Silverstein, freshmen Natalie Machiran, Dru Moffett, Anjolie Norton and Cami Wiseman and sophomore/freshman Payton Maloney. Norton and Silverstein started both games in the backfield and goal, respectively, while Bernardy started the opener against UNC as a back.
• Boston University is 1-1 on the season after opening weekend, defeating Providence (3-0, Aug. 30) before falling to Boston College (6-0, Sept. 1) on the road. Three different Terriers have scored goals this season -- Tess Csejka tallied their game-winner -- while goalkeeper Sophie Ortyl owns a 3.33 goals-against average and .688 save percentage. Michigan leads 4-2 in the all-time series against Boston University and has won three in a row against the Terriers, including a 3-1 victory in the last meeting at Ocker Field in 2011.
• Providence also is 1-1 entering the weekend after falling to Boston University 3-0 in its season opener (Aug. 30) and bouncing back with a 2-1 win over Bryant on Sunday (Sept. 1). Ally DeCoste and Bella DelNegro each has scored a goal this season, while goalkeeper Asia Porter owns carries a 1.52 goals-against average and a .625 save percentage. Michigan narrowly leads 3-2 in the all-time series against Providence and has won the last two meetings, including a 1-0 decision in the most recent matchup on the road in 2015.
