ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The ninth-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey will be back in action on Friday (Jan. 3) when it takes on No. 13 Ohio State outdoors at Wrigley Field in the Frozen Confines at 4 p.m. CT on Big Ten Network. The teams will rematch on Sunday (Jan. 5) at Yost Ice Arena for a 5 p.m. tilt on B1G+.
Notes
• This marks the third time Michigan and Ohio State have played each other outside. The teams first met at the 2012 Frozen Diamond Faceoff in Cleveland in front of 25,865 fans at Progressive Field. Michigan won the game, 4-1, with Shawn Hunwick making 31 saves and Chris Brown pacing the offense with a goal and two assists. Two seasons ago, the teams played at First Energy Stadium in the 2023 Faceoff on the Lake -- with OSU taking a 4-2 decision with Gavin Brindley and Eric Ciccolini scoring while Erik Portillo stopped 30 shots.
• The Frozen Confines marks Michigan's 10th all-time outdoor game, the most of any collegiate program. The Wolverines are 4-4-1 in outdoor games.
• Michigan boasts a 96-51-16 all-time record against Ohio State in the 163 games that have been played. The Wolverines are on a five-game win streak against the Buckeyes, with the last loss being at the Faceoff on the Lake in February 2023.
• Ohio State is 13-4-1 overall, ranked No. 13 in the latest USCHO national poll and is 6-2 in the Big Ten to sit in fourth place with 16 points in its eight games. The Buckeyes have won their last four straight including sweeps of Penn State and Notre Dame at Value City Arena.
• Michigan posted an 11-6-1 record during the first semester, jumping out to a 10-3-1 record through November. The Wolverines lost three straight including a pair at Minnesota and one to Wisconsin before closing the slate with an overtime win over the Badgers. Michigan is fifth in the B1G standings with 13 points in eight games, and is ranked ninth in the nation.
• Freshman Michael Hage leads the team in scoring with 18 points on 10 goals and eight assists in 15 games. He ranks second in the nation in goals per game behind Boston College's Ryan Leonard and in rookie scoring behind BC's James Hagens. Garrett Schifsky, Evan Werner and T.J. Hughes follow with 13 points apiece.
• Logan Stein and Cameron Korpi have split goaltending duties. Korpi is 5-1-1 with a 2.59 goals-against average and a .904 save percentage. Stein owns a 6-4 record with a 3.07 GAA and an .893 save percentage.
• Michigan's power play has converted 21 percent for 24th in the nation while its penalty kills ranked 20th at 83.1 percent. Ohio State's power play is 40th at 17.2 percent and penalty kill is 17th at 84.3 percent.
• Ohio State averages 3.22 goals per game and has the sixth-best defense -- limiting teams to 1.94 gpg. Michigan's offense averages 3.00 gpg and the defense is allowing 2.89 gpg.
