EVANSTON, Ill. -- The No. 15-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team claimed seven bouts, including each of the last five, to cruise to a 26-10 win at Northwestern on Friday night (Jan. 17) at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
Down 10-7 at the intermission break, the Wolverines evened the score at 165 pounds then pulled away, earning three of their four bonus wins over the last four matches. Sophomore/freshman Beau Mantanona keyed the surge with a 4-3 ranked win over Northwestern's 18th-ranked Max Mayyfield. Mantanona, ranked 21st at 165 pounds, broke the scoreless tie with a quick reversal, rolling to a single leg in the air and returning Mayyfield to his back for two and two.
Fifth-year senior Joseph Walker, ranked 28th at 174 pounds, used a late takedown and rideout to secure an 11-1 major decision against Aiden Vandenbush. Walker scored on a single leg in the final five seconds of the first period, added a double leg in the second and another in the waning seconds of the third to earn the major margin and finish with 1:02 in riding-time advantage. Fifth-year senior Jaden Bullock, ranked at 184 pounds, scored a double leg early en route to his 5-0 decision against Jon Halvorsen. Pushing for the bonus point in the third, Bullock earned a late stall point but could not get another score.
Graduate student Jacob Cardenas earned a 16-6 major decision for his second win of the season over 12th-ranked Evan Bates at 197 pounds. Cardenas, ranked third, scored quickly in the first before breaking it open in the second with a double leg and four-point tilt off a late restart. He added another go-behind takedown in the third and finished with a 2:31 time advantage. Cardenas improved to 10-0 on the season with 10 bonus wins.
Graduate student Josh Heindselman, ranked 10th at heavyweight, closed out the dual with the most dominant win of the night, scoring six takedowns and four back points in the first period to secure a 22-5 technical fall against Dirk Morley. He scored a go-behind takedown with :10 left in the period then used a roll-through half to earn the near-fall points and end the bout early. He is 14-0 on the season with 11 bonus wins, including eight tech falls.
Michigan also added two wins in the first half of the dual -- one lopsided and one gritty. Sophomore Sergio Lemley, ranked 11th at 141 pounds, rolled to a 10-2 major decision against 23rd-ranked Chris Cannon. Lemley scored takedowns in the first and third periods and rode out the second. He grabbed Cannon's ankle on a low single and did not let go en route to his latter takedown with :28 remaining and rode out the bout to earn 2:53 in advantage time. Lemley is 5-0 in duals this season.
Sophomore/freshman Dylan Gilcher rallied to earn a 4-4 tiebreaker win over 23rd-ranked Sam Cartella for his first dual win of the season at 149 pounds. Down three points late in the third period, Gilcher scrambled for a go-behind takedown with :16 seconds left and rode out the third period to force overtime. After a scoreless sudden victory, Gilcher rode out the first tiebreaker and easily fended off Cartella in the second to earn the comeback win.
The Wolverines (4-1, 1-1 Big Ten) will close out the weekend road trip against No. 8 Minnesota on Sunday (Jan. 19) in Minneapolis, Minn. The dual is slated for a 1 p.m. CST start at Maturi Pavilion and will be streamed live on B1G+.
