U-M Falls on the Road to No. 11 Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The No. 21 University of Michigan men's basketball team could not overcome No. 11 Purdue's blistering 51-point first half, falling 91-64 at Mackey Arena on Friday (Jan. 24).

Four Wolverines scored in double figures with Vladislav Goldin leading Michigan with 14 points and six rebounds. Tre Donaldson, Nimari Burnett, and Roddy Gayle Jr. each scored 11 points.
First Half
Purdue (16-5, 8-2 Big Ten) jumped out to an early 13-2 lead as Michigan (14-5, 6-2 Big Ten) turned the ball over five times in the first three-and-a-half minutes. Donaldson hit a key three-pointer to halt a Purdue run, but the Boilermakers started the game 9-for-11 from the field, holding a 19-9 advantage with 14:17 to go.
Purdue then hit back-to-back three-pointers, prompting a 10-0 run out of the timeout. U-M suffered a scoring drought spanning 3:38, and Purdue led 29-9 with 11:17 remaining.
Over the last seven-and-a-half minutes, Purdue outscored Michigan 13-11 to take a 51-26 lead into the break. The Boilermakers shot 58% from the field and went 6-for-14 from behind the arc, while U-M shot 36 perfect and made just one of 16 three-point attempts. Michigan's 10 first-half turnovers—to Purdue's two—allowed the Boilermakers to score 18 points off turnovers, including 13 fast-break points.
Second Half
Michigan outscored Purdue 8-4 early in the second half, with Gayle scoring U-M's first six points. The Boilermakers then went on to make seven of their next eight shots, taking a 70-42 lead with 12:29 remaining.
Gayle hit a three-pointer at the 7:56 mark to make it 75-50, one of U-M's six makes from behind the arc. After starting the game 0-2 in the first 20 minutes, he scored all 11 of his points in the second half.
Purdue outscored Michigan 40-38 in the second half, with the Wolverines shooting 39 percent from the field.
What's Next
Michigan will return to Ann Arbor when it hosts Penn State on Monday at Crisler Center for the Blue Out. The game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network, with tip-off slated for 6:30 p.m.
