ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team (14-10-2, 8-7-1 Big Ten) hosts Penn State (11-10-3, 2-9-3 Big Ten) this weekend at Yost Ice Arena. The teams face off on Friday (Jan. 31) at 7 p.m. and again on Saturday (Feb. 1) at 6 p.m. Friday's game will be streamed live on B1G+ and Saturday's showdown will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
Notes
• The Wolverines are 14-10-2 overall and ranked No. 13 in the latest USCHO poll while sitting 12th in the Pairwise rankings. Michigan is 8-7-1 in the Big Ten, sitting in fifth place in the standings with eight games remaining.
• Penn State is tied with Notre Dame for last place in the conference standings at 2-9-3. The Nittany Lions are 11-10-3 overall.
• It was a chaotic series when the teams met in November in State College. With Michigan up 4-1 in the opener, Penn State rallied to make it a 5-5 game early in the third before Michael Hage scored the game-winner midway through the period. In the finale, PSU took a 3-0 lead before Michigan stormed back in a 10-6 victory. The Wolverines went 8-for-11 on the power play in the series.
• Michigan owns a 30-17-1 record in the all-time series with Penn State. The Wolverines last swept the Nittany Lions in 2022-23, winning all four games played.
• The nominees for the 2025 Hobey Baker Award were announced last week with the fan vote now open. Michigan has nominated Ethan Edwards, T.J. Hughes and Hage.
• Hughes is on a nine-game point streak, collecting six goals and eight assists dating back to the Dec. 14 Wisconsin game. On the season, he has 27 points in 26 games (11 goals, 16 assists). During the last series with PSU, Hughes had six points, including a four-goal, career-best five-point outing in the 10-6 win.
• The second semester has seen big minutes logged by Edwards. He averages 27:07 of ice time per game over the last eight games. The senior also leads the defensemen in points with 15, scoring three goals and 12 assists and is second in blocks with 33.
• Michigan's power play is back on top, now ranking fourth in the nation at 28 percent. Last season, Michigan recorded a 33.6 percent success rate, the best in college hockey. The Wolverines went 13-for-62 (21 percent) in the first 18 games of the season and have gone 10-for-20 (50 percent) in the last eight games.
