
Ranger Wins Beam Title, Wolverines Fall at No. 12 Denver

DENVER, Colo. -- Freshman Jahzara Ranger earned the balance beam title with a 9.900, but the No. 13-ranked University of Michigan women's gymnastics team fell to No. 12 Denver, 195.700-194.975, on Sunday evening (Jan. 5) at Magness Arena in the season opener.
Peyton Davis, Sophia Diaz, Sophie Parenti and Ranger all started their collegiate careers against the Pioneers. Ranger competed as an all-arounder and won the balance beam title, Diaz and Parenti both competed in two events, and Davis competed on the vault.
Ranger earned U-M's lone event title of the day with a 9.900 on the beam to round out her day while scoring a 9.800 on both the vault and floor exercise.
Sophomore Kayli Boozer made her collegiate debut in two lineups as well, earning a 9.875 on the beam to finish second and a 9.725 on floor. Sophomore Ava Jordan had a solid day with a 9.825 on the uneven bars and a 9.725 on the vault. Graduate student Carly Bauman tied for second on floor with a 9.850 and also scored a 9.850 on the beam in the anchor spot to tie for third.
After a slow start on the bars for the Wolverines, Jordan stepped up and scored a 9.825 in the third spot, while Diaz followed with a 9.775. Jacey Vore notched a 9.800, and Bauman closed out the rotation with a team-best 9.850 as U-M trailed Denver moving into the second rotation.
Jordan closed out her strong day with a 9.725 on the vault, while Ranger recorded a team-high 9.800 in the fourth spot for the Maize and Blue. However, the Pioneers led the Wolverines, 98.475-97.250, at the halfway point of the meet.
Parenti made her collegiate debut on the floor and scored a 9.700 to start the event for Michigan, while Boozer earned a 9.725 in the second slot. Bauman recorded a 9.850, and Ranger ended the third rotation for U-M with a 9.800 with one rotation remaining.
U-M put together its best rotation on the beam, with Boozer scoring a 9.875 in the second spot and Ranger earning the title with her first career 9.900. Bauman finished the meet with a 9.850, but it was not enough as the Wolverines fell to the Pioneers.
Michigan next heads to the Sprouts Farmers Market Collegiate Quad in Oklahoma City, Okla., on Friday (Jan. 10). The Wolverines will compete against No. 14 Arizona, Clemson and No. 8 NC State starting at 8 p.m. CST, and the meet will be broadcast live on ACC Network.
