ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team will open its 2025 campaign on Saturday (Jan. 11) at 1 p.m. against Greenville and Simpson at Cliff Keen Arena. The meet will be streamed live on B1G+. Admission is free for all 2025 regular-season home meets.
Notes
• The Wolverines open the season at No. 2 in the College Gymnastics Association Coaches Poll behind No. 1-ranked reigning national champion Stanford. The Cardinal received 13 first-place votes while Michigan received four. Oklahoma, Nebraska and Illinois round out the top five.
• U-M was selected to win the Big Ten in the conference's preseason coaches poll, with juniors Landen Blixt and Fred Richard named Big Ten Gymnasts to Watch. The Maize and Blue won its fourth straight Big Ten title in 2024 and will look for the program's first five-peat since the 1960s.
• Michigan was the NCAA runner-up last season for the second straight year and earned its fourth straight podium finish. The Wolverines have their sights set on earning the program's seventh NCAA title and first since going back-to-back in 2013 and 2014.
• Fourteen Wolverines who competed at the 2024 NCAA Championships return to the squad, including five All-Americans and one national champion (Paul Juda, floor exercise), as well as 2024 Big Ten individual champions Blixt (floor exercise) and Richard (all-around). Richard was named 2024 Big Ten Gymnast of the Year and Gymnast of the Championships.
• The team added four freshmen and two transfers to the roster in the offseason. Graduate transfer Syam Buradagunta comes to Ann Arbor from Navy, while sophomore Charlie Larson competed for Minnesota's club team last year.
• U-M held its annual Maize and Blue intrasquad on Dec. 7, with team Blue defeating Maize for the second straight year. Blixt was the lone Wolverine to compete in all four events (still rings and high bar were not contested due to equipment malfunctions), earning two event titles in the floor exercise and vault.
• The Wolverines hosted the Panthers and the Storm to open the 2024 season, posting a score of 404.900 to sweep Greenville (383.500) and Simpson (366.00). Michigan won four of six team titles and five of seven individual events, including Pierce Wolfgang's all-around title in his collegiate debut.
• The NCAA men's gymnastics code of points has changed for the 2025 season, shifting from 10 skills to eight per routine. Lineup depth has changed as well, moving from five-up, five-count to four-up, four-count.
